Discussion

A very mild weekend is shaping up for the southern Rockies, but before we talk about that let's give an update on a "cosmic coincidence". First, later today an asteroid will pass by the Earth at a relatively close distance in terms of the cosmos, some 17,150 miles away. This distance is actually closer than geosynchronous satellites which orbit at about 22,500 miles and they provide data for GPS, communications, and weather predictions. Apparently, there is no chance that the asteroid, which is about 50 meters in size, will damage any of these spacecraft. The closest approach of the asteroid will be at about 2:24pm (ET) and this is the closest that any tracked object this size has ever come to the Earth. It is not expected to be visible around here with this closest approach coming during daytime hours. Coincidentally, in an unrelated event, a meteorite exploded early today over the Ural Mountains in Russia damaging many buildings and injuring hundreds of people due to such things as broken glass. The town that took the brunt of this damage, Chelyabinsk, is located about 900 miles east of Moscow.

Back to Earth, it’ll remain on the cold side today, but a big warming trend will take place this weekend as an upper level ridge moves across the area. Temperatures should climb into the 50’s on both weekend days before more cold air returns to the southern Rockies early next week.

Discussion

A very nice end to the week is shaping up for southern California, but before we talk about that let's give an update on a "cosmic coincidence".

Now back home, high temperatures will reach the mid 70’s to close out the work week and also to begin the weekend. The pattern remains dry right through the weekend although a cooling trend will begin on Sunday and late night/early morning low clouds and fog may make a return to coastal sections.

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, very cold, chance for snow showers, lows in the middle teens

Friday

Partly sunny, cold, mid-to-upper 30’s

Friday Night

Discussion

A trough of low pressure will usher in much colder weather conditions today and there can even be an inch or two of snow in the Denver region with higher amounts in the mountains. The chill will only last to the end of the week, and then an upper level ridge of high pressure will move across the area this weekend and we’ll undergo a warming trend with highs by Sunday afternoon in the upper 50’s.

7:00 AM | Mild weather fades away by tomorrow

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mainly sunny, milder, highs near 50 degrees

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cold, lows in the mid 20’s

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, much colder, maybe some snow, low-to-mid 30’s

We’ll squeeze out another mild today in the southern Rockies, but then a trough of low pressure will usher in much colder weather conditions for Thursday and there can even be some snow or snow shower activity associated with the cool down. The chill will last to the end of the week, but then an upper level ridge of high pressure will move across the area this weekend and we’ll undergo a warming trend.
