Discussion

Dangerous Hurricane Irma continues on a WNW track as a category 5 “major” hurricane. The hurricane is being steered by a subtropical ridge to the north and this motion should continue for the next 48 hours or so. After that, an upper-level trough will dig into the eastern US and allow Irma to turn northward. There is still some uncertainty about the timing of this turn northward, but major impact is very likely across southern Florida over the weekend as it makes its turn. Irma is expected to move into the eastern Florida Straits on Saturday and then makes its closest approach to central Florida late Sunday or early Monday with increasing winds and rain.
