An energetic weather pattern is evolving and we’ll have to deal with multiple systems over the next several days. A warm front resulted in some steady light rain around here in the overnight hours, but this has diminished to just a threat of isolated showers for the next several hours. More rain is likely tonight and Saturday as low pressure forms nearby and a cold front advances towards the region. It'll turn windy and colder tomorrow night and there can be a snow shower late at night and then Sunday should be a dry day with breezy and cold conditions. Another system will have to be watched for late Tuesday as it pulls out of the south-central US and towards the Ohio Valley/Mid-Atlantic. That system can bring snow or rain to the region by Tuesday night and it will usher in another cold air mass for the middle of next week.

The next system of significance will bring rain here later tonight into early tomorrow as a warm front pushes northward through the region and there can be residual showers later in the day on Friday and also tomorrow night. On Saturday, low pressure will form nearby and a cold front will advance towards the region resulting in more rain around here as we begin the first weekend of January. That cold front will usher in strong winds and colder air for Saturday night and Sunday and as the low pressure intensifies to our northeast, there is an outside chance that the rain changes to snow briefly by early Sunday. A “clipper” low pressure system will follow closely and it could spread some snow shower activity into the Mid-Atlantic region late Sunday into early Monday and then another storm will have to be watched for later Tuesday as it pulls out of the south-central US and towards the Ohio Valley. That system will usher in another cold air mass for the Mid-Atlantic by the middle of next week.

The new year will be ushered in with brisk and cold conditions and dry weather should prevail as high pressure builds into the region. The dry weather will continue on Thursday, but then a storm system will impact us with rain at the end of the week and first part of the weekend. First, a warm front will spread some rain into the area beginning late Thursday night/early Friday and then a cold front will keep us wet on Saturday as well. The winds will pick up noticeably by Sunday as the next cold shot arrives and we’ll have to watch a clipper system dropping southeastward across the Great Lakes early next week as it could result in a snow shower or two around here.

A cold frontal system will work its way through the region today and the afternoon will feature a pick up in the winds as a chilly air mass arrives. The winds will continue to be brisk tonight and on Wednesday along with moderately chilly conditions as we usher in the new year. High pressure will then give way to another storm system for Friday and Saturday with periods of rain possible on both days.

The new work week will start off on the wet side as low pressure forms over a frontal boundary zone in the region and generates periods of rain or drizzle, some of the rain can be briefly on the heavy side and a rumble of thunder is possible. This same front will then turn around as a warm front on Sunday and showers are likely during the afternoon hours as temperatures climb to the 50’s. Rain is likely to continue and intensify on Sunday night and then colder air will push into the region by the middle of next week following the passage of a cold front.

High pressure moved into the region on Thursday following the Arctic cold frontal passage and it’ll stay in control through the weekend. A couple of weak fronts may come through the area early next week, but in general, the weather will cooperate for any pre-Christmas travelers. A look ahead to Christmas Day suggests we’ll likely experience partial sunshine and moderately cold conditions with afternoon highs in the upper 40’s.

An Arctic front crossed the region late yesterday and ushered in a much colder-than-normal air mass for this time of year. Temperatures today will struggle to reach the freezing mark and brisk winds will produce even lower wind chills. The cold will become less harsh by tomorrow, but it’ll stay colder-than-normal going right into the weekend.
