A very chilly air mass has invaded Florida and near freezing temperatures are possible late tonight in many spots. Conditions will be quite favorable in the overnight hours for a significant drop in temperatures with mainly clear skies and a chilly air mass firmly in place across central Florida. In the far northern areas, a “freeze warning” is in effect for late tonight in Lake and Volusia (inland) counties where temperatures could drop to the freezing mark. There is also a chance for patchy frost in some of the far northern areas, but the air mass is quite dry limiting those chances.

A frontal passage late yesterday ended our stretch of unseasonably warm weather and it’ll turn much cooler today with a stiff north wind. The winds will gusts past 35 mph or so and temperatures will likely hold nearly steady not far from the 60 degree mark. The weekend will feature calmer conditions and a noticeable warm up by Sunday afternoon at which time temperatures could reach back into the middle 70’s across central Florida.

High pressure near the Bahamas will maintain control of our weather for another day and high temperatures this afternoon should reach the lower 80’s. The daily high temperature record for today is 83 degrees in Melbourne set in 1976 and it is not out of reach. By later tonight, low pressure to our north will drag a cold front through the region and it’ll turn noticeably cooler for the second half of the week and the winds will be a factor.

The weather looks quite nice for central Florida as we end the work week with high pressure in control. A weak front will push into the region on Saturday and it can generate some patchy cloudiness and perhaps an isolated shower or two. High pressure ridging will strengthen in the southeastern states early next week and this will allow for warming across Florida and our highs will likely once again flirt with the 80 degree mark.
