Our significant rain event that began on Monday will continue for the next couple of days, but it will change in nature from yesterday’s steady, soaking, chilly rain to one with warmer conditions and occasional showers and thunderstorms. The overall result will be quite similar, however, in that heavy rain can fall at just about any time and flooding will continue to be a major concern. In fact, some of the thunderstorms that form later today can reach severe levels with isolated tornadoes even possible. Excessive rain will likely fall in the Appalachian Mountains from central Pennsylvania to north-central Maryland over the next two days where some spots could receive over 6 inches of additional rainfall. The entire Mid-Atlantic region from the east coast to the Ohio Valley will be absolutely soaked by the time this latest prolonged significant rain event winds down later this week. Once the moisture from the remains of Tropical Storm Lee finally pulls out of the Mid-Atlantic region later this week, there will be so much humidity left behind that a lingering shower or thunderstorm will still be possible on Friday, Saturday and Sunday although much of the weekend should be rain-free.
