8:45 AM | Accumulating snow continues into the early afternoon hours and some sleet can mix in

Paul Dorian

Discussion

Snow continues to fall this morning across the New York City metro region and snow will be the main precipitation type for the remainder of the morning, but sleet can mix in at times during the mid-day hours. In fact, there is a batch of heavier snow currently headed towards us from SE PA and central NJ that should enhance our snow rate over the next couple of hours. So far there have been reports (as of 7AM) of about 1.5 inches of snow in Central Park and at LaGuardia Airport, and the additional accumulations should leave a general 3-5 inch snowfall by the time the precipitation winds down during the early afternoon hours. Roads will continue to be slick in many locations much of the day as temperatures fail to reach the freezing mark and temperatures tonight will drop back down to near 20 degrees so watch for potential refreezing on untreated road surfaces where melting has occurred. Believe it or not, temperatures could rise to the mid 50’s on Monday and much of the week looks mild; however, there are continuing signs that the month of February will bring about colder weather.
