The storm that dumped massive amounts of snow on much of Colorado yesterday is now centered over Missouri with heavy snow falling over Nebraska and Iowa. Incredible reports of snow were reported in Colorado with 49 inches near Black Hawk, 36 inches in Evergreen and West Jamestown, 21 inches near Boulder and 15 in Denver. This will head to the eastern states over the next 12 to 24 hours and will spread precipitation into the DC metro region later this afternoon. It’ll likely be warm enough at the start for a light rain, or a mix of light rain and snow, but late tonight a changeover to snow should occur from northwest to southeast. Small accumulations of a coating to an inch are possible in and around the District with 1-2 inches possible in the northern suburbs by later Sunday morning (e.g., Montgomery and Howard Counties, MD). Well to the west, 2-4 inches can accumulate tonight in eastern West Virginia. The snow threat winds down later in the morning on Sunday and the next few days will just be moderately cool. Elsewhere, no snow is expected from this system in New York City and points north and east as I-80 is roughly the extreme northern cutoff location. Longer term, there are continued signs for a big cool down in the Mid-Atlantic region as February rolls on.
