Discussion
The warm air from yesterday has already been displaced by a chilly ocean flow (east winds) that developed in the overnight hours. A "back-door" cold front dropped southward along the coast and the chilly ocean air has made it all the way to just south of the DC metro region and there is very little hope for the warmer air to return before yet another cold front moves in later today from the Ohio Valley. This transition back to reality will continue today with occasional showers, maybe even a rumble of thunder, and strong winds that will pick up dramatically out of the W-NW behind the late day Ohio Valley cold frontal passage. In fact, winds from late today through much of tomorrow can gust to 50 mph or so as a storm along the front strengthens rapidly to our north. Temperatures on Saturday will be much closer to normal (normal high is now 46 degrees) and wind chills will be even lower. Winds calm down on Sunday and then it turns milder again early next week. After that, we’ll have to monitor the progress of a strong storm that will likely pull out of the center of the country by about the middle of next week and head towards the East.
