Discussion

High pressure will move offshore today and this will allow for a noticeable increase in temperatures and humidity until a backdoor cold front reverses that trend on Saturday. Temperatures this afternoon will likely reach the lower 90’s ahead of the front, but should be confined to the mid-to-upper 80’s on Saturday. After that we’ll be looking west for the approach of the remains of Isaac along with a frontal system. These two features may very well combine to spread some rain to the Mid-Atlantic early next week before high pressure takes over again at mid-week, and some of the rain can be heavy at times.

Isaac will remain a big story today as its remnants will spread some very heavy rain into previously drought-stricken areas like Arkansas and Missouri. Elsewhere, the tropics remain very active as we continue towards the climatological peak of tropical season which occurs during mid-September. Kirk is a hurricane way out in the Atlantic and it is no threat at all to the US; however, Tropical Storm Leslie will have to be closely monitored next week along the east coast as there are some indications that this system could get uncomfortably close late next week or weekend.
