Discussion

The combination of a strong cold front barreling eastward from the Upper Midwest and an expanding area of deep moisture near the Gulf of Mexico will help to generate a heavy rain event for the eastern third of the country over the next 48 hours and this will also include strong thunderstorm activity. Showers should get underway here late tonight and continue tomorrow morning and then there will be periods of rain during the afternoon and evening along with a strong thunderstorm or two, and some of the PM rain will be heavy at times. The cold front that is sweeping eastward will then push off the east coast by early Wednesday morning and we’ll dry out here in the Mid-Atlantic and stay on the cool side with below normal temperatures for the second half of the week. There will likely be a widespread swath of 2-4 inch rainfall amounts from this upcoming event by early Wednesday morning throughout the eastern third of the nation from the Gulf of Mexico to northern New England.
