The ingredients are coming together for a nasty weather event in the East over the next 24 hours as a strong cold front closes in on the coast at the same time moisture-rich air moves northward from the Gulf of Mexico. Showers this morning will evolve into periods of rain this afternoon and evening, and strong thunderstorms could mix in as well later today with the potential for damaging winds and even isolated tornadoes. Some of the rain will fall heavily at times over the next 24 hours and, by the time the storm winds down early Wednesday, a widespread swath of 2-4 inches of total rainfall is likely from the Gulf states to New England with the Appalachian Mountains especially hard hit. Winds will be quite strong today even before thunderstorm activity develops, and could gust past 50 mph during those potential late day or early evening strong storms. The strong cold front will push off the coast early tomorrow and that frontal passage will usher in cool, dry air for the remainder of the week. Another cold front will threaten us with more showers late on Saturday. One other note, the weather in the East will likely wreak havoc on tonight's baseball schedule with games in New York (Mets/Phils, Blue Jays/Yanks) and DC (Nationals/Dodgers) in jeopardy.
