The next big player on the field in terms of storms is now pulling out of the Rockies and heading towards the central Plains. This storm will reach the Upper Midwest later tomorrow and widespread heavy snowfall will be the result all the way from Denver, CO to Green Bay, WI. In fact, parts of the Upper Midwest will get more than a foot of snow and winds will whip to 50 mph on the back side of the low late tomorrow and tomorrow night with blowing and drifting. This same storm will push a strong cold front in our direction on Thursday night and the result here will be periods of rain, some of it heavy, and maybe even a rumble or two of thunder. Temperatures may drop during the day Friday behind the front and winds will intensify and those strong winds will continue right through Saturday night. Snow showers can’t be ruled out around here later Friday, Friday night or Saturday as the storm remains rather stationary in the Northeast US. There will be a significant “lake-effect” snow event on Friday and Saturday downwind of the eastern Great Lakes. Numerous snow showers are likely, for example, in higher elevation places like West Virginia, extreme western Virginia and western Maryland later Friday and Saturday.
