A battle zone is setting up for today in the I-95 corridor from DC to Philly to NYC between snow, sleet and rain and all three precipitation forms will have their time. A powerhouse storm will become primarily a rain event around here by tonight, but it will start as snow this afternoon, possibly mixed with sleet at times, and accumulations of up to a couple of inches are likely before an eventual changeover to sleet and then to rain by tonight. At the height of the storm tonight, rain will fall heavily at times and the winds will get quite strong gusting up to 50 mph, and there may even be a thunderstorm mixed in. Heavy snow will fall today in mountainous areas well away from the coast while coastal sections will receive flooding rainfall. There will also likely be a zone with a significant ice storm just to the east of the heavy snow region. Yet another storm will affect us this weekend and that storm will take a coastal track which should produce an overall colder scenario around here; consequently, odds favor snow. However, it does not look like the weekend storm will be as moisture-laden as today's storm, and some of its moisture may slide to our southeast.
