Yet another low pressure system to our south will affect the region today at the same time colder air is pouring in from the northwest. As a result, precipitation is likely to begin later this morning in the form of rain, but then as the colder air moves in, that rain will change to snow. Snow likely continues late this afternoon and early tonight with possible accumulations by the end of the storm be on the order of 1-3 inches (the higher amounts to the south of the District). Even more significant snow will fall farther to the south across central and southern Virginia and northern North Carolina. Quite cold air follows the storm on Friday, but that air mass will quickly modify this weekend before the coldest air so far this winter season moves in during the early and middle parts of next week.
