7:00 AM | Snow arrives early today then sleet, freezing rain, plain rain and fog; roller coaster ride with temperatures this week

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Snow for awhile this morning followed by sleet and then freezing rain, there can be a small accumulation of snow of a coating to an inch to be followed by a small accumulation of ice; by later this afternoon the freezing rain should become just plain rain as temperatures inch above the freezing mark towards a late day high in the middle 30’s

Tonight

Light rain or drizzle tonight that could still freeze on some surfaces this evening in the N and W suburbs so watch for black ice, fog will form and it could get quite thick and temperatures may actually climb towards morning, lows in the low-to-mid 30’s during the evening hours

Tuesday

Cloudy with fog early and a little bit of light rain or drizzle, milder, upper 40’s

Tuesday Night

Mostly cloudy, more light rain or drizzle and some fog possible, mild, mid 40’s

Wednesday

Mostly cloudy, unseasonably warm, periods of rain, some of which can be briefly heavy, gusty winds and maybe even a thunderstorm, temperatures surge to at or slightly above 60 degrees

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, colder, rain or snow showers possible in the morning, highs near 40

Friday

Partly sunny, even colder, snow showers possible, near 30

Saturday

Mostly sunny, unseasonably cold, highs near 30

Discussion

A wild ride this week with all of the following included in the forecast: snow, sleet, freezing rain, light rain, heavy rain, strong winds, unseasonably cold, unseasonably warm, fog, and even a possible thunderstorm. As milder air advances towards us this morning, it’ll run into stubborn resistance with the entrenched cold Arctic air mass not willing to give up its ground – at least not yet. As a result, snow will develop early today causing some small accumulations of a coating to an inch, and then sleet and freezing rain are in the offing for the late morning hours and then, as temperatures inch above the freezing mark, ordinary rain (light) will fall later this afternoon and tonight. It will, however, stay pretty close to the freezing mark early this evening; consequently, there can still be freezing on some surfaces in the suburbs for awhile this evening before the milder air makes serious in roads by early Tuesday so watch out for some black ice. Temperatures could actually climb late tonight as a thick fog develops. Temperatures tomorrow should climb through the 40’s and should surge to 60 degrees on Wednesday as a strong cold front pushes towards the east coast. That front will generate some brief heavy rain here on Wednesday, perhaps even some strong winds and thunder, and then colder air will rush in behind the front Wednesday night and Thursday, and the renewed chill will last right into the first part of the new month.
