Discussion

Weak high pressure will lose control of the weather around here this morning as it shifts off the east coast while a low pressure system heads northeast from the southeastern part of the country towards the Virginia Capes. The air will be only moderately cold for this system; consequently, precipitation that begins during the afternoon hours could be in the form of rain or a mix of rain, snow and sleet. However, once the low swings to the coast and our winds shift to a more northerly direction, colder air will move in and the precipitation will change to all snow early tonight. Accumulations are likely to be in the 2-4 inch range by late tonight as temperatures drop to near 30 degrees for lows. Another snow threat exists for the weekend as colder air pours into the eastern states, but it is still too early to tell where the eventual coastal storm will set up.
