Discussion

Our drought of “significant snow” is about to end in the DC metro region. A major storm will affect the region from late today through tomorrow night and it should bring significant snow to much of West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and the entire DC metro region. Low pressure will drop southeastward today across the Ohio Valley reaching southern West Virginia by tonight. From there, the storm should move to the southeastern Virginia coast by around mid-day tomorrow and then intensify as it pulls slowly to the northeast. Precipitation should begin around here later today probably in the form of rain or a mix of rain and snow, but that will change to snow later tonight and continue primarily as snow on Wednesday. The snow winds down tomorrow evening, but there can be lingering snow or rain showers on Thursday morning. Preliminary estimates for snowfall totals by tomorrow night in the DC region are 6-12 inches with the higher amounts in the western suburbs of the District.
