3:00 PM | Storm "underperforms" in the District, but slams the western Virginia suburbs with significant snow

Heavy bands of precipitation continue to rotate around the Mid-Atlantic low pressure system that has now moved off the southeast Virginia coast and mixed rain and snow will continue into the early evening hours before tapering off from west-to-east later tonight. Accumulations will end up varying quite a bit from west-to-east across the region with the distant western suburbs in Virginia (ie western Loudoun and Fauquier Counties) getting about 8-12 inches, the “closer-in” suburbs just outside the beltway on the west, northwest and southwest sides with 4-8 inches, and in the District where only light accumulations will occur. Winds will continue to be quite strong throughout the region for the next several hours gusting up to 40 mph or so as the storm continues to intensify off the VA coastline.
