Arctic air is flooding into the Mid-Atlantic region and the combination of sharply dropping temperatures with lingering precipitation raises the possibility for some icy spots by the end of the day. Any remaining precipitation will likely change to snow showers or a combination of snow showers with ice pellets over the next few hours and temperatures should drop to near freezing by the end of the day. As a result, there is the threat for some icy spots on area roadways by the evening rush hour as temperatures continue to plunge. By morning, a widespread area in the Mid-Atlantic region will be near or even slightly below the zero degree mark and temperatures on Tuesday afternoon will struggle to escape the single digits. The deep freeze begins to ease on Wednesday after a bitter cold start to the day. Today’s Arctic shot has caused record or near record lows all the way from the Upper Midwest to the Deep South (see “blue dots" on above map; courtesy coolwx.com) and this pattern will extend to the eastern states by tomorrow morning.
