Paul Dorian

Rain arrives this morning and lasts into the mid-day hours and that rain can freeze on some surfaces in the northern and western suburbs and there can be some ice pellets mixed in as well, maybe even a few rumbles of thunder, becoming milder later this afternoon with highs reaching the low-to-mid 40’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cold, some patchy fog possible towards morning which could cause some dampness and slick spots on the roads, lows near 25 degrees

Thursday

Morning clouds and patchy fog with possible slick spots then partly sunny, mild, mid 40’s

Thursday Night

Mostly cloudy, chilly, some rain and patchy fog possible late, mid 30’s

Friday

Mostly cloudy, very mild, windy, more rain is likely including brief downpours, possibly a thunderstorm with strong gusts, mid-to-upper 50’s

Saturday

Cooler and partly sunny, upper 40's

Sunday

Partly sunny, breezy, colder, low 40’s

Monday

Partly sunny, cold, low-to-mid 30’s

Discussion

A fast-moving system will throw some rain our way from mid-morning through mid-day and while it is likely to fall as plain rain in the city of Philly, many suburban locations will see freezing on some surfaces and ice pellets can mix in along with a few rumbles of thunder. After the cold start to the day, late day temperatures should climb into the low-to-mid 40's and the 40's are likely for highs on Thursday as well. Patchy fog late tonight and early Thursday can cause dampness and possible slick spots on roads with below freezing temperatures. By Friday, as a strong cold front approaches from the west, temperatures should climb well into the 50's along with some rain and possibly even a thunderstorm. Any brief downpour can cause some localized flooding issues given the extensive snowpack and clogged gutters and drains. It’ll gradually turn colder over the weekend and next week looks quite cold.

Finally, some impressive snowfall numbers from this winter: 6th snowiest winter on record in NYC, 5th snowiest ever in Chicago, 3rd snowiest ever in Philly, and the 4th snowiest winter in the last 25 years in DC.
