Discussion
Our stretch of pleasant weather is over in the Mid-Atlantic region as copious amounts of moisture is streaming into the area ahead of an intensifying upper-level trough. This upper level trough will take on a “negative” tilt by early tomorrow morning as it pushes southeastward towards the I-95 corridor enhancing upper motion in this area. The combination of the intensifying upper level trough, an impressive low-level jet and high moisture content in this air mass will help generate significant rainfall for the Mid-Atlantic region into early Wednesday with 3-4 inches possible in the NYC metro region and even 5 inches in isolated spots. While heavy rain is possible later today, the heaviest rainfall around here is likely to occur from late tonight into Wednesday morning as secondary low pressure develops near the coastline at the same time an occluded frontal system moves into the region. In fact, the morning commute on Wednesday in the NYC metro region could be seriously affected by heavy rainfall. Later Wednesday, the heavy rain threat will shift northeastward into New England where a wild day of weather can be expected. Along with the potential for heavy rainfall and flash flooding, there is a slight risk for isolated severe weather during this weather event in the overnight hours.
