Discussion

A wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain will continue to create some slippery travel conditions during the evening hours on untreated surfaces in many of the northern and western suburbs. Temperatures at ground level are currently hovering near the freezing mark and they will continue to do so for the next several hours with more precipitation closing in on the area from western Pennsylvania. The precipitation band (see radar image) that is headed our way contains pockets of moderate-to-heavy sleet and freezing rain and it should arrive in the Philly western suburbs after 7pm or so. By later tonight, cold, dense air at ground level will reluctantly give way to some warmer air that has been working all day to erode it in upper levels of the atmosphere. Temperatures should gradually rise after midnight to above freezing - even in suburban locations - and will be higher in the early morning than they are right now. In fact, temperatures tomorrow afternoon are likely to climb into the 50's as the warmer air takes control - at least for a brief time. Colder air returns on Thursday following the passage of yet another cold front and it’ll stay on the cold side at the end of the work week with more mixed precipitation possible on Friday.
