Discussion

A somewhat unstable atmosphere can result in snow showers today in the Philly metro region and there can be some small-scale heavier snow bands across New Jersey associated with an inverted ("norlun") trough extending to the northwest from low pressure over the western Atlantic. In fact, a few inches of snow are possible today in coastal sections of New Jersey in this small-scale snow event and a dusting to an inch is possible in Philly. Later in the week, another low pressure system will approach the southern California/northern Baja California region from the eastern Pacific Ocean and it will then re-emerge over Texas by early Saturday morning. From there, this late week/weekend storm should head towards the Carolina coastline and it should produce a swath of heavy rain along the way in the Deep South and heavy snow on the north side from Oklahoma-to-southern Virginia/North Carolina. After that, it is still somewhat unclear as to whether this storm will impact the big cities from DC-to-Philly-to-NYC with any significant snow, but the threat is still on the table.
