Oppressive heat and humidity will persist today as high pressure continues to influence our weather. A weakening frontal system will approach the region tonight and then a secondary frontal system will follow late tomorrow. Each of these two fronts can generate showers and thunderstorms for the Mid-Atlantic region from later today into tomorrow night with some heavy downpours and possible strong-to-severe thunderstorms. Over the next three days, there will be oppressive heat and humidity for the I-95 corridor, heavy rainfall at times, and possible strong-to-severe thunderstorm activity. High pressure will continue to influence our weather today and Thursday and it’ll produce some sunshine each day along with high heat and humidity. In fact, some locations could reach record high levels on either afternoon. There will be enough instability in the atmosphere later today for some scattered showers and thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic region; however, most of the activity will stay north of the PA/MD border. As a frontal system slowly approaches the region later tomorrow night, our chances for showers and thunderstorms will increase and we are likely to see some heavy rainfall at times from later tomorrow into Friday night. In addition, there can be some strong-to-severe thunderstorms to deal with from later tomorrow into Friday night. Looking ahead, the weekend will feature much improvement with sunshine and more comfortable conditions.

A cold frontal system will approach the region today and generate showers and thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic region.. This front will stall out just to our north over the next 24 hours keeping us unsettled at mid-week and we’ll stay rather hot. By early Thursday, this front will push northward, but then high pressure should build across southeastern Canada and the Great Lakes region by Friday which will force this same frontal system back to the south and it’ll finally clear the I-95 corridor by the weekend. There is the chance for some heavy rainfall on Thursday night and Friday as this frontal system finally passes through the region.

An unsettled and hot stretch is headed our way after a decent weekend that featured a spectacular finish on Sunday with comfortable humidity levels. A frontal system will approach on Tuesday and the threat for showers and storms will increase somewhat and then this front will stall out just to our north. This same front will then make another attempt at passing through our area on Thursday and it could generate some strong-to-severe thunderstorms around here in the day or Thursday night. Our soaking rain event will wind down today and an evening frontal passage will usher in a more comfortable air mass for the weekend. Temperatures later today will become noticeably warmer than yesterday following the advance of a warm front and it will remain on the humid side. While still in the 80’s this weekend, the air mass will feel more comfortable as overall humidity levels will be lower.

A frontal system has stalled out to our south and it will act as a conduit for moisture to ride along over the next 24 hours or so and the result will be a soaking rainfall for the DC metro region. There will be multiple rounds of rain into Friday with thunderstorms also mixed into the picture and some spots may end up with more than two inches of rainfall by late tomorrow. Temperatures today will be held down by clouds and rainfall, but this same front will push northward tomorrow as a warm front and we’ll turn noticeably warmer on Friday as we close out the work week. A cold front, however, will arrive tomorrow night and it’ll usher in a nice air mass for July for the upcoming weekend with low humidity.

High pressure has shifted to a location off the east coast and this re-positioning will allow for very warm and humid air to flow into the Mid-Atlantic region from the Deep South. As a result, high temperatures for the next few days are likely to climb to within a few degrees of the 90 degree mark to go along with more noticeable humidity levels. As far as precipitation is concerned, while there can be an isolated shower or thunderstorm today and tonight and again early next week, the best chance for showers and thunderstorms through next Tuesday is likely to come later tomorrow and tomorrow night as a frontal system approaches the region and some of these storms can be strong-to-severe.

It’ll turn breezy and noticeably warmer today as high pressure shifts off the coast and our low-level winds become southwesterly. It’ll be hot and humid on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and there can be some shower and thunderstorm activity with the best chance coming late Saturday/Saturday night. One final note, NASA succeeded early this morning in the launch of a sounding rocket at the Wallops Island, Virginia facility after several prior postponements due to clouds, etc.
