Arctic high pressure dominates the scene across the eastern two-thirds of the nation and this will be the case for several more days. A clipper system will drop southeastward into the Mid-Atlantic region by Saturday and it’s precipitation field should stay well to the north of here. A cold front is likely to produce showers in the area as we end the work week and maybe a thunderstorm or two. The front will be close by on Saturday and showers will threaten again although temperatures will be somewhat cooler. By the early part of next week including Christmas Eve (Sunday) and Christmas Day (Monday), it’ll turn colder following the passage of the cold frontal system.

As low pressure moves from Texas into Arkansas, rain will push into our area as a warm front advances to the north and this could be a soaking rain event with a thunderstorm or two mixed into the picture. In fact, there is an outside chance at some severe thunderstorm activity in the Tennessee valley as there will be strong upper-level dynamics in the region. Final rainfall totals could exceed two inches in parts of the region by the time the evening arrives. Another storm system is likely to impact the area at the end of the week and into the weekend before colder air arrives by early next week. Indeed, there is even a chance for some snow in the region on Christmas Day as temperatures are likely to be held in the 30’s following the passage of a strong cold frontal system.

An upper-level low over Texas will force a frontal system to our south to push northward today and the result is liable to be some decent rainfall across the area, maybe even a thunderstorm or two. In fact, given the moist atmosphere, some areas could receive in excess of an inch of rain from this advancing warm frontal system.
