Remnants of Beryl continue to lift northward in the western Atlantic well to the east of Florida and Hurricane Chris has raced far away from the east coast towards the open northern Atlantic Ocean. A ridge of high pressure will build westward across Florida from the western Atlantic over the next couple of days and continue our very warm and humid conditions around here.

An upper-level low and broad trough of low pressure will continue their westward trek today along the Gulf Coast and this will continue to generate some instability in central Florida. As a result, additional showers and thunderstorms are possible later today and any storm that forms can be on the strong-to-severe side with heavy rain and gusty winds. There are other disturbances to track over the next several days in the Atlantic Basin as a relatively favorable pattern for tropical activity continues into next week.

An upper-level low and broad trough of low pressure will continue their westward trek today along the Gulf Coast and this will generate significant instability in the area. As a result, showers and thunderstorms are quite likely to form later today and tonight on a widespread basis and any storm that forms can be on the strong-to-severe side with heavy rain and gusty winds. This same threat will continue on Friday across central Florida and it’ll stay very warm and humid this weekend with a continuation of the threat for showers and thunderstorms.

Abnormally strong upper-level ridging continues to dominate the scene over the northern US and this will continue to contribute to very warm and humid conditions around here. Whenever abnormally strong high pressure ridging sets up in a position over the northern US this time of year, one has to monitor the tropical region near the Bahamas, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. With strong high pressure situated to the north, there tends to be low-level convergence in this particular part of the Atlantic Basin tropical region and the flow of air would likely push westward any tropical system that may actually form. Stay tuned.

Upper-level ridging will expand and intensify over the Mid-Atlantic region during the next few days and temperatures will respond here by climbing to 90 degrees this afternoon and likely to repeat this on a daily basis well into next week. The heat will be accompanied by uncomfortably high humidity levels and there is little chance of relief from rainfall which will likely by quite scattered. This high heat and humidity will continue into at least the middle part of next week. One final note, whenever abnormally strong high pressure ridging sets up in a position over the Northeast US this time of year - as it will do this weekend and early next week - one has to monitor the tropical region near the Bahamas, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. With strong high pressure situated to the north, there tends to be low-level convergence in this particular part of the Atlantic Basin tropical region and the flow of air would likely push westward any tropical system that may actually form.

High pressure ridging will build into the Northeast US over the next few days and this will continue the pattern around here of very warm and humid conditions along with the threat of scattered showers and thunderstorms. In addition, the overall pattern of strong high pressure to the north this time of year opens the door for westward-moving tropical systems to head towards the Bahamas, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. We’ll monitor this possibility for signs of tropical activity during the first week of July.
