Philadelphia is very likely headed for its wettest month ever and it could even happen by later tonight. Last night’s rainfall, which delayed the Phillies game for more than two hours, has brought the monthly rainfall amounts at Philly International Airport to 12.24 inches which already makes it the wettest August ever. The wettest month ever here was September of 1999 when 13.07 inches fell - thanks in large part to the remains of Hurricane Floyd. Strong thunderstorms late today and early tonight could put us over the top for this monthly record, and if that doesn’t do it, then the next system would likely do it as a strong cold front is headed our way for the Sunday night/early Monday time frame and that front should spark more showers and heavy thunderstorms later Sunday and Sunday night. Tomorrow will actually be a decent day with some sunshine although a shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out. Looking ahead, there are continuing signs that a tropical storm or hurricane could be nearing the southeast US coast in about week or so - stay tuned on that.
