Discussion

A cold front passed through the region last night without much in the way of moisture, but the next system to affect us later tonight and tomorrow will have more moisture to work with. Snow will break out this evening and then it should mix with or change to sleet and freezing rain later tonight. There can be an accumulation of an inch or two before the changeover; especially, in the northern and western suburbs. The wintry mix will continue for awhile tomorrow with an icy buildup possible; especially, in the northern and western suburbs before an eventual change to “plain” rain. A strong, cold high pressure system to our north will be the key player in this early weekend event as it should lock in the cold air which will be reluctant to give up its ground at the time the moisture arrives. Stay tuned. Longer term, it looks like a drastic change to colder weather with additional snow chances is in the cards as the month of February begins.
