A cold front passed through the region last night without much in the way of moisture, but the next system to affect us later tonight and tomorrow will have more moisture to work with. Snow will break out around or just after midnight and then continue into early tomorrow morning. There can be a mixing of the snow with sleet or freezing rain or even an eventual changeover to “plain” rain on Saturday, but snow accumulations of 2-4 inches are likely before that occurs with the higher amounts in the northern suburbs. A strong, cold high pressure system to our north will be the key player in this early weekend event as it should lock in the cold air which will be reluctant to give up its ground at the time the moisture arrives. Stay tuned. Longer term, it looks like a drastic change to colder weather with additional snow chances is in the cards as the month of February begins.
