2:30 PM | Intense band of rain, snow, wind advancing towards DC metro region

Paul Dorian

Discussion

An intense line of snow and rain is advancing towards the DC metro region and should reach the western suburbs by 3PM and into the District shortly thereafter. The line currently (2:30 PM) extends from Hagerstown, MD to Culpepper, VA with heavy snow falling in the northern portion of the line and heavy rain falling farther south in Virginia. Temperatures will drop quickly as the line approaches and any rain could change quickly to snow. Winds will also become quite gusty past 30 mph or so out the NW. Heavy snow and wind could reduce visibilities rather quickly as the line passes through in about 15 to 30 minutes and a quick coating is possible. Also, “freeze-up” conditions are possible behind the line later this afternoon and tonight as temperatures drop to below freezing.
