A powerful cold front is closing in from West Virginia and should arrive in the area during the late afternoon hours with occasional showers and possible rumbles of thunder. A chilly NE flow of air has suppressed temperatures so far today in the immediate DC metro region and this should inhibit the chances here for severe weather later this afternoon as the frontal system arrives. However, just to the south of the District, where temperatures may spike just ahead of the front, the chance for severe weather is greater; especially, east of I-95. In fact, the following counties south of the District are now under a tornado watch until 8PM: Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert. All areas in and around the District will have the threat for potentially damaging wind gusts of 50 mph or more right behind the frontal passage late today and tonight as there will be a strong and rapid pressure surge.
