A powerful cold front is closing in on the area from western Pennsylvania and it should arrive in the area between about 5 and 8PM. There will be occasional showers during the remainder of the afternoon and into the evening, and there can even be some rumbles of thunder with the arrival of the front. A chilly NE flow of air has suppressed temperatures today in the immediate Philly metro region and this should inhibit the chances here for any severe thunderstorm activity. However, the entire region is threatened with potentially damaging wind gusts of 50 mph or more right behind the passage of the cold front late in the day and early tonight as there will be a strong and rapid atmospheric pressure surge. The strong wind gusts will continue right through the night and well into the day on Saturday, but it’ll become much more tranquil on Sunday.
