Discussion

A couple of low pressure systems will merge just off the Mid-Atlantic coastline by early tonight and snow will develop here during the early-to-mid afternoon hours and continue into the early evening. Accumulations of 1-3 inches are likely and slick road conditions will develop quickly given the extreme cold ground conditions. Salt loses some effectiveness on the roads when the air temperature is below 25 degrees and that is likely to be the case during most of this event. This snow event, while not at all heavy, will be rather widespread with a general 1-3 inches from DC northward to the Poconos and eastward to the South Jersey Shore. More cold air will follow for the upcoming weekend; however, moderation in temperatures is likely early next week. That transition on Monday between the weekend cold and the early week moderation will be difficult at first and the result could be some sleet mixed in at first with rain before it gets mild enough for just plain rain. Tuesday and Wednesday promise to be much milder with temperatures in the 50's, but colder air moves back into the region by Thursday of next week.
