Discussion

A couple of low pressure systems will merge just off the Mid-Atlantic coastline by early tonight and snow will develop here during the mid-to-late afternoon hours and continue into the evening. Accumulations of 1-3 inches are likely and slick road conditions will develop quickly given the extreme cold ground conditions. Salt loses some effectiveness on the roads when the air temperature is below 20 degrees and that is likely to be the case during much of this event. This snow event, while not at all heavy, will be rather widespread with a general 1-3 inches from DC to the Poconos and east to the Jersey Shore. More cold air will follow for the upcoming weekend; however, moderation in temperatures is likely early next week. That transition on Monday between the weekend cold and the early week moderation will be difficult at first and the result could be some frozen precipitation on Monday in the form of light snow, sleet, and/or freezing rain before it gets mild enough for just light plain rain. Tuesday and Wednesday promise to be much milder here with temperatures not far from 50 degrees, but colder air moves back into the region by Thursday of next week.
