Discussion

A big difference in the overall weather pattern is shaping up for the end of the week. While there will be a northern stream disturbance, this time there will also be a disturbance coming out of the south and indications are growing that they will phase together forming a strong coastal storm on Friday and Friday night. By Friday morning, a storm will be gathering strength around the Cape Hatteras region of North Carolina. It will then intensify rapidly as it moves off the east coast to a position south of Long Island on its way to the Gulf of Maine by late Friday night. Another key player in this scenario will be a large, strong and cold high pressure system locked in place across southeast Canada and this will supply a lot of cold air for much of the Northeast US.

For now this looks like a potential massive snowstorm for much of New England including the Boston metro region where the snow may end up being measured in feet. Farther down the coast in places like NYC and Philly the general scenario looks like the start of the storm late Thursday night/very early Friday will be a mix of snow, ice and/or freezing rain and then there will be a changeover to rain during the day on Friday, and then that will change to accumulating snow Friday night as the storm pulls to the northeast and colder air is drawn in. Significant snow is likely in and around the NYC region on the back end of this storm with a foot or more of snow not out of the question. A few-to-several inches of snow are possible in and around the Philly region on Friday night at the back end of the storm. Odds favor mainly rain in the DC metro region, but even there it can start as a mix bag late Thursday night before changing to rain on Friday and a changeover to snow at the end of the storm cannot be ruled out. Stay tuned.
