A major storm has moved into the Mid-Atlantic region and it will break our “significant snow” drought as 6-12 inches should accumulate by tonight with the higher amounts in that range to the west of the District in the Virginia suburbs. Snow will fall heavily at times and there can even be some thundersnow mixed in as the storm intensifies across southeastern Virginia. Even heavier snowfall is likely today across the higher elevations of eastern West Virginia, western Virginia and western Maryland where more than a foot can accumulate by later this evening. The storm pulls away slowly on Thursday and there can be some residual morning snow showers. Much milder weather moves in this weekend.
