Discussion

An incredibly cold Arctic air mass over the Northern Plains and Rockies will slow down in its progresses to the south and east over the next couple of days. The front at the leading edge of this air mass will ultimately stall in a southwest-to-northeast fashion near the east coast by the end of the week and waves of low pressure will ride along this temperature gradient boundary zone. By Sunday, strong Canadian high pressure will drift into the Northeast US and this system will be the anchor for some very cold low-level air that may get trapped on the eastern side of the Appalachian Mountains in, for example, the I-95 corridor region of the Mid-Atlantic. The end result could be an icy mess around here on Sunday as an area of moisture heads northeastward towards the Mid-Atlantic from the Deep South. It is likely that milder air eventually changes all precipitation to plain rain early by Monday before yet another Arctic air mass blasts into region on Tuesday.
