The threat continues for the first wintry precipitation event on Thursday in the DC metro region as a major coastal storm gets underway. For today, low pressure will pull away from the Mid-Atlantic coastline and another cold air mass will drop southeastward into the Mid-Atlantic region later tonight and Wednesday. This cold air mass will be anchored by strong high pressure on Thursday morning and it will be reluctant to give up its ground as another storm takes shape near the Mid-Atlantic coastline. As a result of the entrenched cold air mass, there could be snow and ice at the onset; especially, in suburban areas to the north and west of DC and small accumulations are possible. Any wintry precipitation at the onset should change to mainly rain later on Thursday and that rain can continue into Friday morning as the storm intensifies along the coast. Once this coastal storm pulls away on Friday, another cold air mass will head in our direction for the weekend.
