7:00 AM | Another cool front headed our way; turns colder again by the end of the week

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Partly sunny, milder, highs near 65 degrees

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, not as cool as recent nights, chance for showers late, lows in the lower 50’s

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, mild, showers likely during the morning and midday hours, mid 60’s

Thursday Night

Becoming partly cloudy, brisk, chilly late, mid-to-upper 30’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, breezy, colder, low 50’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, still chilly, mid 50’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, cool, near 60

Monday

Mostly sunny, cool, upper 50’s

Discussion

High pressure will drift off the New England coast today and lose its influence on our area. A cold front will then approach the region from the west and it should generate some shower activity around here later tonight and especially on Thursday morning. High pressure will build back into the region by Friday and once again a colder-than-normal air mass will move in as we close out the week. The chill will continue through the weekend and into early next week and dry conditions will also prevail.

7:00 AM | Milder on Wednesday which will give way to showers on Thursday and then colder again by Friday

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy, still quite chilly for this time of year, but a little milder than yesterday, highs in the mid 50’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, cold, lows in the lower 40’s

Wednesday

Partly sunny, milder, low-to-mid 60’s

Wednesday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, chance for a few showers late, near 50

Thursday

Cloudy, showers likely, mild, low-to-mid 60’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, breezy, colder, low-to-mid 50’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, still chilly, mid 50’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, milder, low 60’s

Discussion

Temperatures will modify some today and then will climb noticeably on Wednesday as high pressure drifts off the Northeast US coastline. This movement by the high will allow for milder air to push into the region from the southwest and it will also open the door for a frontal system to affect our weather later this week. Showers are likely late Wednesday night and Thursday as a result of the frontal system and then it’ll chill down once again at the end of the week behind the front.

7:00 AM | A cold start to the new week; rain threatens later this week

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, quite chilly for this time of year, highs in the mid 50’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cold, lows in the upper 30’s

Tuesday

Partly sunny, milder, maybe an afternoon shower, upper 50’s

Tuesday Night

Mostly cloudy, cool, low-to-mid 40’s

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, breezy, still mild, some rain likely, low 60’s

Friday

Partly sunny, breezy, cooler, upper 50’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, chilly, mid 50’s

Discussion

It is a cold start to the new work week thanks to high pressure sitting over the Northeast US that originated in Canada. This high will slide off the New England coast over the next 24 hours and this shift will allow for the return of milder air into the Mid-Atlantic region by the middle of the week. A frontal system crossing the country from west-to-east could push some rain our way later this week before another chilly air mass reaches the east coast.

7:00 AM | Mild again today to close out the week, but it gets colder for Sunday and Monday; turn back the clocks this weekend

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Showers likely, mainly during the morning hours and maybe even a thunderstorm mixed in; otherwise, remaining mostly cloudy, breezy and still mild, highs near 70 degrees

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cool, lows in the mid-to-upper 40’s

Saturday

Partly-to-mostly sunny, slightly cooler, slight chance for a shower, mid 60’s

Saturday Night

Partly cloudy, colder, near 40

Sunday

Mostly sunny, breezy, colder, mid-to-upper 50’s

Monday

Mostly sunny, still cold, low-to-mid 50’s

Tuesday

Partly sunny, breezy, not as cold, near 60

Wednesday

Mostly cloudy, breezy, mild, low 60’s

Discussion

Mild air will hang around for another day as we close out the work week, but it’ll turn slightly cooler on Saturday and then even colder for Sunday and Monday following the passage of a weekend secondary cold front. That chilly air mass for Sunday and Monday won’t stick around too long, however, as it should lift out of here by the middle of next week. One final note - we turn the clocks back this weekend.

7:00 AM | Mild for Halloween Day and it stays mild on Friday, but there will also be some rain around

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Considerable cloudiness, quite breezy and warm, maybe a shower or two during the afternoon hours, highs near 70 degrees

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, mild, showers likely and maybe a thunderstorm or two late, lows near 60 degrees

Friday

Showers likely during the morning hours and maybe even a thunderstorm or two; otherwise, remaining mostly cloudy, breezy and still mild, near 70

Friday Night

Partly cloudy, cool, upper 40’s

Saturday

Partly-to-mostly sunny, slightly cooler, slight chance for a shower, mid 60’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, breezy, colder, mid-to-upper 50’s

Monday

Mostly sunny, still cold, low-to-mid 50’s

Tuesday

Partly sunny, breezy, milder, near 60

Discussion

Quite mild today around here as southwest winds push warm air into the region. While a shower or two cannot be ruled out for the afternoon and evening hours, more numerous showers associated with an incoming cool front will likely hold off until later tonight and tomorrow morning and there can even be a thunderstorm or two mixed in. It’ll become slightly cooler on Saturday behind this next front, but then a secondary cold front will push through later Saturday and that will usher in even colder air for Sunday and Monday.

2:30 PM | "Cold" World Series resumes tonight in Boston where history can be made; "Home Run Weather" app index drops to a 0 by game time

Paul Dorian

ortiz

Discussion

Tonight could be a historic night in Boston, Massachusetts as the World Series shifts back to Fenway Park and the Red Sox can clinch at home for the first time in 95 years. Despite two world championships in the last nine years, the Red Sox have not clinched a World Series at home since 1918. The weather for this World Series has been quite chilly; especially, during Games 1 and 2 in Boston with temperatures primarily in the 40’s. In fact, the “Home Run Weather” app index has at times dropped to the lowest value possible, 0 on a scale of 0 to 10, indicating very unfavorable weather conditions for home runs.

The weather looks quite chilly again for tonight’s Game 6 in Boston and indeed the “Home Run Weather” app index drops rapidly this evening to a reading of 0 by game time. Perhaps, not even the cold weather with temperatures in the 40’s can stop David Ortiz, the hottest hitter in baseball. If the Cardinals force a Game 7, the weather actually would be noticeably milder on Thursday night in Boston, but there will also be the chance for showers as a frontal system approaches from the west.

In terms of the coldest World Series games ever (and the records are sketchy pre-1970’s as MLB did not track weather records), the most memorable game occurred in Game 4 of the 1997 World Series in Cleveland, Ohio between the Indians and the Florida (now Miami) Marlins. The first-pitch temperature for that game was 38 degrees with a wind chill in the teens. Snow flurries fell throughout the game and ice patches actually formed on the infield. The first two games of that Series were played in Miami where temperatures were in the high 80’s. The second coldest game in recent history was the first game of the 1979 World Series in Baltimore, Maryland between the Orioles and Pirates with first-pitch temperatures right around 40 degrees and a steady, chilly rain falling.

Perhaps the most memorable game with respect to weather and the World Series is likely Game 5 of the 2008 World Series between the Fighting Phils and the Tampa Bay Rays. That game began on October 27th with 50-degree temperatures and rain falling and was suspended in the 6th inning as the rain became too heavy. The game could not be resumed the next day as a powerful nor’easter continued to pound away on the Philadelphia region with a cold, steady rain and even several inches of accumulating snow in nearby Bucks County, PA. Finally, two days after the game began, Game 5 resumed on a cold night in Philly with first-pitch temperatures at 44 degrees along with a gusty northwest wind - and the Phillies went on to clinch the title.

7:00 AM | 70 degrees likely on Halloween Day as southwest winds push in milder air

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Considerable cloudiness with an isolated morning shower or two, a bit milder, highs not far from 65 degrees

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, not as chilly as recent nights, some patchy fog possible late, low 50’s

Thursday

Considerable cloudiness, quite breezy and warmer, maybe a shower or two during the afternoon hours, but mainly rain-free, near 70

Thursday Night

Mostly cloudy, breezy, mild, showers likely and maybe even a thunderstorm, low 60’s

Friday

Showers likely during the morning hours and maybe a thunderstorm; otherwise, remaining mostly cloudy, breezy and still mild, low 70’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, slightly cooler, chance for a shower, mid-to-upper 60’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, breezy, colder, mid-to-upper 50’s

Monday

Mostly sunny, still cold, low-to-mid 50’s

Discussion

A warm front will lift through our region from the south later today and temperatures will respond on Halloween Day by climbing to 70 degrees along with a stiff breeze out of the southwest. While a shower or two can fall tomorrow afternoon and early evening, more numerous showers from the next cool frontal system should hold off until later tomorrow night and early Friday, and there can be a thunderstorm or two mixed in. It’ll turn slightly cooler on Saturday behind that next cool front, but then a secondary cool front will usher in even colder air for Sunday and Monday. That chilly air mass for Sunday and Monday will lift out of here rather quickly by the middle of next week.

7:00 AM | Cooler today, but it'll turn warmer in time for Halloween Thursday

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny and cooler than yesterday, highs near 60 degrees

Tonight

Increasing clouds, chilly, chance for a shower towards morning, lows by morning in the low-to-mid 40’s

Wednesday

Mostly cloudy, becoming milder, upper 60's

Wednesday Night

Mostly cloudy, not as cool as recent nights, low 50’s

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, windy and warm, maybe a shower or two during the afternoon and early evening hours, more numerous showers late at night, near 70

Friday

Mostly cloudy, breezy, mild, showers likely during the morning hours, upper 60’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, cooler, chance for a couple of showers, low 60’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, breezy, colder, mid 50’s

Discussion

A weak cool front passed through the region late yesterday and it’ll turn slightly cooler today as high pressure builds into the area. A weak disturbance can touch off a shower or two late tonight and early tomorrow as the high pressure begins to exit off the east coast. Milder air will arrive later tomorrow and stick around for Halloween Day along with a stiff southwest wind and there can be a shower or two during the afternoon and early evening hours on Thursday. More numerous showers are likely late Thursday night and early Friday as a cold frontal system moves in from the Midwest and then there will be a strong secondary cold front on Saturday that will usher in even colder air for Sunday and Monday.

7:00 AM | Cool and dry to start the last week of October; warmer and windy for Halloween Thursday

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny and cool, highs in the low-to-mid 60’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cold, lows by morning near 40 degrees

Tuesday

Mostly sunny, slightly cooler, near 60

Tuesday Night

Mostly cloudy, not as cool as recent nights, maybe a shower late, mid 40’s

Wednesday

Mostly cloudy, cool, maybe a few showers, mid 60’s

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, windy, warmer, maybe a shower or two in the afternoon and early evening, heavier showers late at night, near 70

Friday

Mostly cloudy, still breezy, mild, showers likely, near 70

Saturday

Mostly sunny, cooler, low 60's

Discussion

A weak front will pass through the area later today and high pressure will build back into the region for Tuesday and it'll turn out slightly cooler tomorrow afternoon compared to what we'll experience later today. A couple of frontal systems will keep the second half of the week unsettled with the threat for showers from time-to-time and it'll get milder. Halloween Thursday is looking warmer and windy with a few afternoon and early evening showers possible and then heavier showers likely late at night into early Friday. Looking back, Hurricane Sandy struck the New Jersey coastline one year ago tomorrow. Currently, the Atlantic Basin remains quiet in terms of any tropical activity.

2:30 PM | *Major activity on the sun*

Paul Dorian

sunspot

Discussion

Solar activity remains high and intensifying. There is now a new sunspot called AR1882 which rotated over the sun’s eastern limb earlier today and it appears to have erupted with two X-class solar flares (most intense classification). Other sunspot regions called AR1875 and AR1877 have continued to erupt with lesser flares as they rotate towards the sun’s western limb. One of the X-class flares with the new sunspot region was bracketed by two erupting magnetic filaments each located hundreds of thousands of kilometers away from AR1882 which means the flare may been part of an interconnected global solar eruption. More solar flares are in the offing as these three sunspot regions, AR1875, AR1877 and the new AR1882 are on the Earthside of the sun and capable of additional solar eruptions.
