Discussion

A major rain event is headed to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US from later tomorrow into Wednesday with two to as much as five inches of rainfall on the table in spots by the end of the day on Wednesday. A cold front will approach from the Great Lakes region over the next couple of days along with an unusually strong upper level low and this will keep the weather very unsettled around here from later Tuesday into Wednesday with occasional showers and thunderstorms and some of the rain will be heavy at times. Flash flooding is a concern from this upcoming weather system in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US and severe weather is also a possibility during from Virginia to New York on Tuesday night and then on Wednesday across New England where it will be a wild weather day. High pressure will follow behind the frontal system for the second half of the week and temperatures will once again stay at well below normal levels for this time of year.

Partly cloudy, mild, lows in the upper 60’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, still on the cool side, chance for showers, low 80’s

Discussion

High pressure is dominating the weather scene today in the northeastern part of the country and will do so into the weekend. Low pressure will pass to the south later Saturday into Sunday and the threat for showers will increase; especially, just to the south and west of the District. A strong upper level trough and cold front will approach the region by the middle of next week.

Tonight

Mostly clear, cool, low 60's for low temperatures towards morning

Friday

Tuesday

Discussion

A cool front cleared the region on Wednesday and it has ushered in another refreshing air mass for the Mid-Atlantic region. Temperatures and humidity levels will remain in comfortable territory for the next few days – much as it has for the entire summer season. By the latter part of the weekend and the early part of next week - as high pressure pushes farther to the east - unsettled weather is likely to return with an increasing threat of showers and thunderstorms.

6-Day Forecast

Today

Partly sunny, quite warm, humid, chance for a couple of showers and thunderstorms from mid-day on, highs in the upper 80’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, mild and muggy during the evening with possible showers and thunderstorms, turning cooler late, lows in the lower 60’s towards morning

Thursday

Thursday Night

Mostly clear, cool, near 60

Friday

Sunday

Partly sunny, cool, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 80

Monday

Partly sunny, still on the cool side, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low 80’s

Discussion

A cool front will pass through the region later today and usher in cooler and less humid air for the remainder of the week. There can be a few showers and thunderstorms from mid-day through the early evening hours as the front gradually works its way through the region. Rain-free conditions are likely from Thursday into the early part of the weekend as high pressure regains control, but the weather becomes unsettled later in the weekend and early next week.

Wednesday

Partly sunny, quite warm and humid, chance for a couple of showers and a thunderstorm, mid-to-upper 80’s

Saturday

Discussion

The humid weather will continue into tomorrow, but then a cool front will pass through the region and usher in cooler and less humid air for the second half of the week. As the cool front approaches the area on Wednesday, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms in some of the Mid-Atlantic region; especially, north of the PA/MD border. High pressure takes control behind the front for the remainder of the week.

7:00 AM | Humid into mid-week; cooler and less humid on Thursday and Friday

Partly cloudy, mild, patchy fog late, lows in the mid-to-upper 60’s

Tuesday

Friday

Mostly sunny, nice, low 80’s

Discussion

The month of July ended up slightly below normal in the DC, Philly and NYC metro regions and August is off to a cooler-than-normal start. There will be rather typical heat and humidity during the next few days, but then a cool front will usher in cooler and less humid air for Thursday and Friday. Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Bertha will stay well off the east coast as it turns away during the mid-week time frame. It could reach weak hurricane status before turning away from the coast, but its only effect around here will be some rough surf in coastal waters.

7:00 AM | Great way to wind down the month of July

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mainly sunny, pleasant, highs in the low 80’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, comfortable, lows by morning in the low-to-mid 60’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, warmer, mid 80’s

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy, mild, near 65

Friday

Partly sunny, more humid, chance for a couple of showers and possibly a thunderstorm, low 80’s

Saturday

Mostly cloudy, cooler-than-normal, chance for a couple of showers and possibly a thunderstorm, near 80

Sunday

Mostly cloudy, still cooler-than-normal, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low 80’s

Monday

Partly sunny, warm, humid, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Discussion

Our spectacular late July weather continues today with low humidity values and although it will be a tad warmer than yesterday, temperatures will remain below normal for this time of year. High pressure in control of our weather will move off the Northeast US coastline by the end of the week and the return flow of air on its backside will promote increasing humidity in the area as an ocean flow of air develops.

7:00 AM | Great weather as we close out July

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mainly sunny, pleasant, highs in the upper 70’s

Tonight

Mostly clear, comfortably cool, lows by morning near 60 degrees

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, a tad warmer, but still cooler-than-normal for this time of year, low 80’s

Wednesday Night

Partly cloudy, cool, low 60's

Thursday

Mostly sunny, warmer, mid 80’s

Friday

Partly sunny, more humid, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, low 80’s

Saturday

Mostly cloudy, still cooler-than-normal, chance for a couple of showers and a thunderstorm, near 80

Sunday

Mostly cloudy, still cooler-than-normal, chance for showers and thunderstorms, low 80’s

Discussion

A strong cold front passed through the region yesterday paving the way for a stretch of very comfortable weather conditions. Temperatures today will have a hard time escaping the 70’s in much of the Mid-Atlantic region and the below-normal temperatures will continue through much of the week. Humidity levels will also be way down for the next couple of days, but will increase at the end of the week as an ocean flow develops.

7:00 AM | Another comfortable air mass for this time of year arrives later today

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Partly sunny, becoming breezy and not as warm or as humid as yesterday, chance for an additional shower or thunderstorm this afternoon, highs in the low 80’s

Tonight

An evening shower possible; otherwise, partly cloudy skies, more comfortable, lows by morning near 60 degrees

Tuesday

Mostly sunny, cool for this time of year, upper 70's

Tuesday Night

Mostly clear, quite cool, upper 50’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, still very pleasant, low 80’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, nice, low-to-mid 80’s

Friday

Partly sunny, comfortable, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, low 80’s

Saturday

Mostly cloudy, still below-normal temperatures, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, low-to-mid 80’s

Discussion

Powerful thunderstorms pounded the Mid-Atlantic region in the overnight hours ahead of an approaching cold front and that frontal system will works its way through the region later today. The frontal passage will usher in another spectacular air mass for this time of year with low humidity values and comfortable temperatures. The cooler air, anchored by strong Canadian high pressure and below-normal for this time of year, will become quite noticeable later tonight and it should stay quite comfortable for the next few days.

12:45 PM | **Could be a wild night in the Mid-Atlantic region**

Paul Dorian

GFS[GFS computer model forecast map at 300 mb for later tonight showing an impressive jet streak and upper level wave]

Discussion

The combination of a vigorous upper level wave, impressive jet streak and developing low pressure will generate a wild scene tonight throughout the Mid-Atlantic region with numerous showers and thunderstorms from early evening through late tonight. Some of the thunderstorms will reach severe limits with torrential rainfall, damaging wind gusts, possible hail and even isolated tornadoes. The greatest chance for severe weather tonight will likely be from the eastern part of the Ohio Valley eastward to the Appalachian Mountains, but severe weather potential exists as well into the I-95 corridor from DC-to-Philly-to-New York City.

The timetable for the shower and thunderstorm threat is approximately from 8pm to 3am. All of this activity is associated with an usually strong and widespread cold air outbreak for this time of year that will bring spectacular weather to the Mid-Atlantic region from Tuesday through the rest of the week, but we may have to pay a price before we get there.
