A cold front will arrive tonight and this system will likely bring us another round of showers and thunderstorms. Any storm that forms along the frontal boundary zone later today or tonight can be on the strong side with heavy rain, gusty winds and frequent lightning. Canadian high pressure will then build into the Mid-Atlantic region on Wednesday and it will produce a long stretch of nice weather lasting right into the early part of next week.

Solar eclipse day has finally arrived and there will be some clouds around in the Mid-Atlantic region. High pressure over the region will move offshore today and a disturbance will approach from the west giving us the chance for thunderstorms both this afternoon and tonight. Later in the week, Canadian high pressure will arrive with comfortable conditions for this time of year. In the DC-to-Philly-to-New York City corridor, the eclipse will be partial and its duration will be about 2 hours and 40 minutes. The beginning of the solar eclipse in this corridor will be around 1:20 PM (ET), the time of maximum coverage of the sun around 2:45 PM (ET), and the ending time around 4:00 PM (ET). The percentage of totality will be roughly 81% in the DC metro region, 75% in and around Philly, and 72% in and around the NYC metro region. Special solar eclipse glasses must be worn for viewing throughout today’s event.

A week in August without one 90 degree day – sure looks likely this week in the DC, Philly and NYC corridor. A few showers are also possible during the AM hours; especially, to the south and east of the District. High temperatures for much of the week will be in the 80’s which is below normal for this time of year.

Low pressure will track along a frontal system today and generate occasional rain and possible thunderstorms as we start off the new work week. Some of the rain will fall heavily at times with more than two inches in some areas and the combination of clouds and the rainfall will help to keep temperatures confined to the 70's for highs. In fact, there will likely be no uncomfortable excessive heat this entire week as another pretty refreshing high pressure system takes control at mid-week.

Another front should cross the region early next week and it could result in another round of showers and thunderstorms late Sunday night and on Monday.
