7:00 AM | Still a cool pattern for the west coast

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Fog and drizzle possible early then becoming partly sunny, highs in the mid-to-upper 60’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, breezy, possible fog and drizzle late, lows near 60

Saturday

Fog possible early then becoming partly sunny, mid-to-upper 60’s

Saturday Night

Partly cloudy early, mostly cloudy late with some patchy fog and drizzle, near 60

Sunday

Fog and drizzle possible early then mostly cloudy skies, mid-to-upper 60’s

Monday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, mid-to-upper 60’s

Tuesday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, mid-to-upper 60’s

Wednesday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, upper 60’s

Discussion

The overall weather pattern continues with normal-to-below normal temperatures along the west coast of the US with all of the excessive heat well to the east of the area. That pattern will likely continue for the next several days with a persistent onshore flow along the west coast and daily high temperatures generally confined to the mid-to-upper 60’s in the Los Angeles metro region. Late nights will find low temperatures close to the 60 degree mark during this time period along with low clouds, fog and even some drizzle; especially, near coastal regions. Some warming is possible during the latter part of next week.

7:00 AM | Nice break in the heat on Wednesday, but 90's are coming back

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, warmer, breezy, low-to-mid 80’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cool, upper 60’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, hot, mid 90's

Friday Night

Mostly clear, mild, low 60's

Saturday

Mostly sunny, hot, mid-to-upper 90’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, hot, slight chance for a shower or a thunderstorm, mid 90’s

Monday

Partly sunny, hot, slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm, low-to-mid 90’s

Tuesday

Partly sunny, hot, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, low 90's

Discussion

Temperatures were considerably cooler on Wednesday following Tuesday’s frontal passage, but the trend will reverse today and, by the weekend, we’ll be way up in the 90’s once again. Rather seasonal temperatures for today in the low-to-mid 80’s for highs, but that will give way to the 90's on Friday and the mid-to-upper 90’s are likely this weekend into early next week. Opportunities for precipitation will be limited over the next few days as the area continues to be cut off from any significant moisture source.

7:00 AM | While much of the country bakes today, the west coast stays pretty pleasant

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Some fog possible early; otherwise, mostly cloudy skies for much of the day, upper 60’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, breezy, possible fog late, near 60

Thursday

Fog possible early then remaining mostly cloudy, cool, mid-to-upper 60's

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy early, mostly cloudy late with some patchy fog, near 60

Friday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, cool, mid 60's

Saturday

Fog and drizzle possible early then remaining mostly cloudy, cool, mid-to-upper 60's

Sunday

Fog and drizzle possible early then becoming partly sunny, cool, mid-to-upper 60's

Monday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, mid-to-upper 60’s

Discussion

The overall weather pattern of late has featured normal-to-below normal temperatures along the west coast of the US with excessive heat well to the east of here over the Rockies and Plains, and now that heat will expand to the Mid-Atlantic for a couple of days. That general cool pattern here will likely continue over the next week or so with a persistent onshore flow along the west coast and daily high temperatures generally confined to the 60's throughout the Los Angeles metro region. Late nights will find low temperatures close to the 60 degree mark during this time period along with low clouds, fog, and even some drizzle; especially, near the coastal regions.

7:00 AM | A welcome significant break in the heat, but it will not last long

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Partly sunny, much cooler compared to recent days, mid-to-upper 70's

Tonight

Mostly clear, cool, low-to-mid 50’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, warmer, breezy, low-to-mid 80’s

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy, mild, near 60

Friday

Mostly sunny, hot, mid-to-upper 90’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, hot, mid-to-upper 90’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, hot, chance for a few thunderstorms, low-to-mid 90’s

Monday

Partly sunny, hot, chance for a thunderstorm or two, low-to-mid 90’s

Discussion

A cold front worked its way through the region early yesterday and temperatures today will respond significantly by holding in the 70's for highs compared to the excessive heat of the past couple of days. This break, however, will be short-lived as temperatures tomorrow will jump back to the 80's and then we'll move well into the 90's once again for the late week and weekend. Enjoy the break today!

7:00 AM | Still hot for today with temperatures climbing well up into the 90's; extreme fire danger continues

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, still quite hot, breezy, low-to-mid 90's

Tonight

Partly cloudy, windy, mid-to-upper 50’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, breezy, much more seasonal, near 80

Wednesday Night

Partly cloudy, cool, mid 50’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, warmer, mid-to-upper 80’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, hot, mid 90’s

Saturday

Mainly sunny, hot, chance for a thunderstorm late, mid 90’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, hot, chance for a shower or thunderstorm, low-to-mid 90’s

Discussion

Temperatures will continue to be well above normal today as highs should once again move well up into the 90's. Cooler air will give us a break on Wednesday, but it will turn out to be rather short-lived. Temperatures will once again head into the 90’s by the end of the work week and that hot weather is likely to continue this weekend as well.

7:00 AM | Marine-layer clouds will once again be stubborn to give way

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Fog possible early; otherwise, mostly cloudy skies, quite breezy, upper 60's

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, breezy, possible fog late, near 60

Wednesday

Fog possible early then remaining mostly cloudy, near 70

Wednesday Night

Mostly cloudy with some patchy fog late, near 60

Thursday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, low 70’s

Friday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, cool, upper 60’s

Saturday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, upper 60’s

Sunday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, upper 60’s

Discussion

Temperatures should be close to normal for much of this week with highs within a few degrees of 70 each day and lows late at night near 60 degrees. There will be areas of late night fog; especially, near the coast through the period, and the late night marine-layer clouds will be stubborn to give way to sunshine during the next couple of afternoons.

12:20 PM | An update on "Solar Cycle 24"

Paul Dorian

Discussion

We are now a few years into the current solar cycle (#24) which began during 2008 and it is becoming increasingly clear as to where it stands in term of relative strength compared to other cycles. Despite the fact that there was solar flare activity late last week from the group of sunspots known as AR1504, this particular solar cycle, which is expected to reach a solar maximum next year, has been one of the weakest in recent times in terms of total number of sunspots. This outcome continues the recent downward trend in sunspot cycle strength that began with solar cycle 22 which peaked around 1990. In fact, at the current pace, solar cycle 24 could turn out to be the smallest in about 100 years and there are some who already predict that the next cycle, 25, will be even weaker than this one during the next decade. While a weaker cycle does not rule out the threat for strong solar storms, it does suggest that they will occur less often than during stronger, more active cycles. At the same time the sun appears to be in a period of weaker and weaker sunspot cycles, the northern Pacific Ocean has appeared to have entered a long-term colder phase which can last up to a few decades. The combination of these two cyclic processes may impact global temperatures over the next several years and we'll continue to track it.

7:00 AM | Extreme fire danger continues with possible record-breaking heat, windy and very dry conditions

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, very hot, dry, windy, “fire weather” conditions, upper 90’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, breezy and mild, low-to-mid 60's

Tuesday

Mostly sunny, breezy, still quite hot, low 90’s

Tuesday Night

Partly cloudy, cool, upper 50’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, more seasonal, slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm, low 80’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, warm, slight chance for a thunderstorm, mid-to-upper 80’s

Friday

Mainly sunny, hot, low-to-mid 90’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, hot, low 90’s

Discussion

Normal high temperatures for Denver are around 83 degrees for this time of year and we’ll be way above that to start off the new week with hot, dry and windy conditions. In fact, temperatures today could approach the record of 99 degrees in Denver last set in 1990. Unfortunately, these conditions are conducive to wildfires and that threat will not diminish until mid-week at which times temperatures may briefly retreat to more normal levels. A cold front will pass through the region by early Wednesday and this will bring about some relief to the excessive heat, but hot weather is likely to return late this week.

7:00 AM | Clouds will be reluctant to burn off today along with continued breezy and cool conditions

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Some patchy fog early today; otherwise, mostly cloudy skies, cool and breezy, upper 60's

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, breezy, possible fog late, near 60

Tuesday

Fog possible early then becoming partly sunny, near 70

Tuesday Night

Partly cloudy early, mostly cloudy late with some patchy fog, near 60

Wednesday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, low 70’s

Thursday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, cool, near 70

Friday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, upper 60’s

Saturday

Fog possible early then mostly sunny skies, upper 60’s

Discussion

Clouds will be stubborn to retreat today and temperatures will struggle to escape the 60's along with a stiff breeze. The next few days will then feature late night and early morning low clouds and fog; especially, near coastal regions, but some sunshine is likely to develop during the afternoon hours.
