Monday

Partly sunny, warm, maybe a shower or thunderstorm, upper 80’s

Discussion

A strong upper-level trough will swing through the region Thursday night and this will usher in pleasantly cool air for Friday and Saturday. Temperatures on Friday could hold in the low 70’s behind the frontal system and do no better than the upper 70's on Saturday. By Sunday, there will be a noticeable rebound in temperatures as highs will get back well up into the 80’s. As far as moisture is concerned, it appears to be quite scant for today (dew points in the 20's) and for the remainder of the week with dew points remaining quite low at the end of the week in the cool air mass.

Discussion

Remnant moisture from Tropical Depression John will add to our cloudiness through tomorrow, and it could spark a shower or thunderstorm at just about anytime and location in and around the LA metro region. Upper-level high pressure will extend back into our region late this week and weekend and that will lead to slightly warmer conditions.

Discussion

Moisture will move into the southern California region for the next couple of days from the remnants of Tropical Storm John and there will be more clouds as a result and even the chance for a mid-week shower or thunderstorm. There will be a gradual warming trend during the late week and weekend as high pressure builds back into the region once the tropical moisture pulls out.

7:00 AM | Temperatures start off pretty hot this week, but then get under control

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, pretty hot, highs in the low 90's

Tonight

Partly cloudy, cool late, lows in the upper 50’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, highs in the low-to-mid 80’s

Wednesday Night

Partly cloudy, cool, mid-to-upper 50’s

Sunday

Partly sunny, warmer, low-to-mid 80’s

Discussion

After a pretty hot day to start the new work week, temperatures will remain under control for the rest of the week and, in fact, there is the chance for some quite cool weather by the end of the week. Upper level high pressure will remain south of Colorado for the second half of the week and an upper level trough of low pressure will swing through late Thursday into early Friday. The passage of this trough of low pressure will usher in cooler air to close out the work week and begin the weekend.

Tuesday

Mostly sunny skies after early morning fog, cool, highs in the low-to-mid 70’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny skies after early morning fog, pleasant, highs in the low 70’s

Discussion

A trough of low pressure will keep us a little cooler for today compared to earlier this week, but then high pressure will expand westward on Sunday and temperatures will return to normal through the middle of next week. Monsoonal moisture from the southwest US will be confined to the mountains and desert areas and this will produce a slight chance for afternoon thunderstorms in those locations through early next week. Some Pacific tropical moisture (Ilena) will also feed into the southern California region over the next couple of days.

7:00 AM | Hot again today, but temperatures trend downward this weekend into early next week

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, still pretty hot, highs in the low 90's

Tonight

Partly cloudy, mild, lows in the low 60’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, very warm, highs near 90

Saturday Night

Partly cloudy, mild, low 60’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, very warm, maybe a shower or thunderstorm, upper 80’s

Monday

Mainly sunny, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Tuesday

Mainly sunny, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Wednesday

Partly sunny, warm, still a possible shower or thunderstorm, low-to-mid 80’s

Discussion

High pressure will remain established over the state and, in fact, will spread out to the east and west across the southern US. The remains of Isaac will pass by well to our east today heading northward through the Missouri Valley before turning eastward this weekend in the Ohio Valley. Some moisture may actually move into the region late this weekend and early next week from the Pacific tropical system (Ileana) and that will increase our chances for showers and thunderstorms at that time. Temperatures remain quite hot today, but will trend downward this weekend into early next week.

7:00 AM | Marine flow redevelops; slightly cooler for the weekend

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Becoming mostly sunny after some early morning clouds and fog, breezy, warm, highs in the mid-to-upper 70’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, breezy, mild, fog possible late, lows in the upper 60’s

Friday

Mostly sunny skies after early morning fog, pleasant, low 70's

Friday Night

Mostly cloudy, mild, some fog possible late, mid 60’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny skies after early morning fog, pleasant, low 70's

Sunday

Mostly sunny skies after some early morning fog, cooler, low 70's

Monday

Mostly sunny skies after early morning fog, cool, highs in the low 70’s

Tuesday

Mostly sunny skies after early morning fog, pleasant, highs in the low 70’s

Discussion

The very warm conditions of yesterday will give way to slightly ccoler weather over the next few days as high pressure ridging in the upper atmosphere weakens and a persistent marine flow redevelops. This change in the overall weather pattern will lead to a daily return of late night and early morning low clouds and fog;especially, along coast sections.

7:00 AM | One more hot day in the 90's

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, still hot, mid 90’s

Tonight

Partly cloudy, mild, lows in the low 60’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, not quite as hot, highs near 90

Friday Night

Partly cloudy, mild, low 60’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, very warm, upper 80’s

Sunday

Mainly sunny, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Monday

Mainly sunny, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid 80’s

Tuesday

Mainly sunny, warm, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid-to-upper 80’s

Discussion

Persistent upper level high pressure will continue over the area and temperatures will again respond by climbing to the 90’s, but a slight downward trend will begin on Friday and highs this weekend could hold just under 90 degrees. Sub-tropical moisture will be limited so rainfall chances will be at a minimum over the next couple of days, but that will change somewhat by late in the weekend and early next week. As a result, the chance for some shower and thunderstorm activity will tend to rise for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

12:30 PM | Isaac continues to maintain hurricane status and is moving at a painful pace; more than 9 inches of rainfall has already been reported near New Orleans, LA

Paul Dorian

Discussion

Isaac continues to spin only very slowly to the NW at 5 mph and it has had very little weakening over the last several hours. The latest measurements indicate sustained winds are still at hurricane status levels at 75 mph and the central pressure has only risen 2 millibars since early this morning. As a result, SE Louisiana, southern Mississippi and southwest Alabama continue to get pounded by wind and rain and will so for several more hours. Flooding is a major concern throughout this region given the slow movement of Isaac and more than 9 inches have already been reported at Lakefront Airport in New Orleans. Winds have gusted as high as 72 mph in New Orleans and to 110+ mph in a few nearby locations with nearly 500,000 already without power. Longer term, the remains of Isaac still appear to be headed first to the north towards Arkansas and Missouri and then to the east towards the east coast. In fact, the remains of Isaac could very well interact with a frontal system to produce some rainfall in the Mid-Atlantic by the latter part of the Labor Day weekend. By the way, today happens to be the 7th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina which attained category 5 status over the Gulf of Mexico before weakening to a category 3 hurricane as it approached the New Orleans metro region on 8/29/2005.

7:00 AM | Cooling trend for the weekend after a very warm mid-week; Isaac pounding away at Louisiana and Mississippi with wind and rain

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny skies, breezy, very warm, highs in the lower 80's along the coast, even higher inland

Tonight

Partly cloudy, breezy, mild, lows in the upper 60’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny skies, breezy, highs in the low-to-mid 70’s

Thursday Night

Mostly cloudy, mild, some fog possible late, mid 60’s

Friday

Mostly sunny skies after early morning fog, pleasant, highs near 70

Saturday

Mostly sunny skies after some early morning fog, cooler, highs in the upper 60’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny skies after early morning fog, cool, highs in the upper 60’s

Monday

Mostly sunny skies after early morning fog, pleasant, highs in the low 70’s

Discussion

It’ll turn slightly warmer on Wednesday under the control of strong high pressure, but then a cooling trend will begin later this week. Also, a stronger marine layer will develop later this week to go along with the cooling trend. Temperatures this weekend will actually turn out to be a few degrees below normal.

Isaac came ashore last night in SE Louisiana and it remains classified as a hurricane this morning and it is absolutely pounding Louisiana and Mississippi with wind and rain. The latest measurements have winds sustained at 80 mph with gusts to 95, central pressure at 970 millibars and continued very slow movement to the NW at 5 mph. This slow movement is the main reason that flooding is a very serious concern down there as tremendous amounts of rainfall are likely over the next 24 hours or so on the order of 20+ inches in spots.
