7:00 AM | Damaging wind gusts possible today as strong jet moves overhead

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, very windy, cooler, highs in the low-to-mid 60’s

Tonight

Mostly clear, windy, cold, lows by morning in the mid 30’s

Thursday

Mostly sunny, not as windy, cool, low-to-mid 60’s

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy, cold, mid 30’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, windy, cool, near 60

Saturday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, near 70

Sunday

Mainly sunny, pleasant, low 70’s

Monday

Mainly sunny, cooler, low 60’s

Discussion

Strong and damaging winds continue to be a concern for today as a strong jet streak with 150 knot winds is going to pass over the state. This could set the stage for some damaging wind gusts later today on the order of 60 mph or greater. Temperatures will also drop noticeably from yesterday’s highs in the 70’s along with those very strong wind gusts. Winds will slowly weaken overnight and tomorrow promises to be a rather calm and pleasant day.

Early morning fog possible then becoming mostly sunny, cool, near 70

Discussion

An upper level high pressure system combined with an offshore flow of air will continue our very warm conditions right through tomorrow. Winds will increase some today and temperatures may peak in this heat spell with inland readings possibly in the triple digits. A significant cooling trend will begin on Friday and continue through the weekend.

7:00 AM | Damaging winds possible on Wednesday as rip-roaring jet moves overhead

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, breezy, cool, lows by morning in the low 40’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, becoming very windy, cooler, low-to-mid 60's

Discussion

Strong, damaging winds continue to be a concern for the region and are in the forecast for tomorrow as a strong northwest flow aloft is going to develop over the state. The jet streak that will move overhead of our region has wind speeds of over 150 knots and this could set the stage for damaging wind gusts on Wednesday of 60 mph or greater. Temperatures will also drop some 15 degrees for highs between today and Wednesday following readings later today in the upper 70’s.

7:00 AM | Warming trend continues, Wednesday likely the warmest day of the week

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny skies, warm, highs in the upper 70's

Tonight

Mostly clear, mild, breezy, near 65

Tuesday

Mostly sunny skies, warm, near 80

Tuesday Night

Discussion

The warming trend that began this weekend will continue early this week, but then a cooling trend is likely to return by the end of this week. High pressure will dominate the scene for much of the week and no rainfall is in sight. Temperatures will run above normal for the next few days with Wednesday likely the warmest day of the week.

7:00 AM | A dry and warm start to the week, but then winds pick up and temperatures drop some

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, warm, highs in the upper 70’s

Tonight

Mostly clear, cool, lows by morning in the upper 40’s

Tuesday

Partly sunny, breezy, warm, upper 70’s

Tuesday Night

Partly cloudy, chilly, low-to-mid 40’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, windy, cooler, near 60

Thursday

Mostly sunny, windy, cool, near 60

Friday

Mainly sunny, pleasant, low 70’s

Saturday

Mainly sunny, mild, low 70’s

Discussion

In general, the weather looks to be on the dry and warm side for the next couple of days as a large upper level high pressure ridge builds off the west coast. However, winds will increase during the mid-week as a strong upper level jet moves overhead and temperatures will drop somewhat compared to today and tomorrow as cooler air moves back into the region on Wednesday and Thursday.

7:00 AM | Upper-level low pulls away and a warming trend begins later this weekend

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Becoming mostly sunny, breezy, cool, mid-to-upper 60’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, cool, breezy, near 60

Saturday

Mostly sunny skies, breezy, cool, near 70

Saturday Night

Partly cloudy, cool, lows near 60

Monday

Mostly sunny skies, pleasant, mid 70’s

Tuesday

Mostly sunny skies, pleasant, mid 70’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny skies, still pleasant, mid-to-upper 70's

Discussion

The strong upper level low pressure system that moved overhead on Thursday will spin to our east today and a warming trend will take place later this weekend. Temperatures will gradually climb this weekend as a weak offshore flow of air develops so that by early next week we’ll be back above normal levels.

7:00 AM | Upper-level low closes in on the central Rockies and increases our chances for showers and thunderstorms

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy, windy, a few showers and thunderstorms, highs in the mid-to-upper 60's

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, windy, cool, chance for showers and thunderstorms, lows by morning in the low 40’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, windy, cool, maybe a shower or thunderstorm, mid 60’s

Saturday Night

Partly cloudy, chilly, upper 30’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, near 70

Monday

Partly sunny, milder, low 70’s

Tuesday

Mainly sunny, pleasant, low 70’s

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, cool, mid 60’s

Discussion

Upper level low pressure will close in on us today and the threat for showers and thunderstorms will increase. Winds will also increase and transport some low level moisture into the region and that combined with colder air moving in aloft will create instability needed to generate showers and thunderstorms. Given the cold air expected in the upper atmosphere later today and tonight, hail could become a problem with any given storm as freezing levels will be quite low. Gusty winds will continue to be quite noticeable on Saturday before calmer conditions develop on Sunday.

11:30 AM | New sunspot regions appear to be quite active

Paul Dorian

Discussion

The sun has become more active in recent days as Solar Cycle 24 continues to progress and there are now two new sunspot regions rotating into view that are of interest. Ultraviolet imagery from the “Extreme UV Imaging Telescope” (EIT) has shown these new sunspot regions to be quite active. There was, in fact, a coronal mass ejection (CME) earlier this week from a now departing sunspot region and it resulted in northern lights to be seen across portions of the northern tier of states (the Mid-Atlantic region was cloudy throughout this time period). These two new sunspot regions will need to be monitored over the next several days as they are rotating into a location that will be facing the Earth in a more direct fashion; therefore, they could have an effect on the Earth’s upper atmosphere if new coronal mass ejections were to occur. Solar Cycle 24 continues towards what is expected to be a solar maximum sometime later next year.

7:00 AM | Shower and thunderstorm threat continues today thanks to upper level low

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly cloudy, breezy, cool, chance for showers and thunderstorms, mid 60’s

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, cool, breezy, chance for showers and thunderstorms, near 60

Friday

Mostly sunny skies, cool, breezy, mid-to-upper 60’s

Friday Night

Partly cloudy, cool, lows near 60

Saturday

Mostly sunny skies, pleasant, low 70’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny skies, warmer, mid-to-upper 70’s

Monday

Mostly sunny skies, warm, mid-to-upper 70’s

Tuesday

Mostly sunny skies, still warm, upper 70's

Discussion

A strong upper level low pressure system will bring cooler-than-normal weather around here for the rest of the week and it will raise the chances for showers and thunderstorms right through tonight. In fact, with the cold air that is expected in the upper part of the atmosphere, some of the thunderstorms that do form could contain hail and brief heavy downpours over the next 12-24 hours. The threat for showers will diminish on Friday and temperatures will begin a warming trend during the latter part of the weekend.
