7:00 AM | Much colder weather returns by Thursday and snow showers are possible in the late week

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, pleasant, mid 70’s

Tonight

Mostly clear, cool, lows by morning in the mid 40’s

Wednesday

Mostly sunny, windy, cooler, low 60’s

Wednesday Night

Mostly cloudy, chance for a few rain and/or snow showers, colder late, mid 30’s

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, much colder, snow showers possible, low 40’s

Friday

Mostly cloudy, colder, maybe some more snow showers, mid 30’s

Saturday

Partly sunny, cold, low 40’s

Sunday

Mainly sunny, not as cold, low 50’s

Discussion

It’ll stay rather warm for one more day, but big changes in temperatures are coming for the second half of the week. An upper level trough of low pressure will bring about a dramatic cool down for the second half of the week as it moves into the region later this week. Temperatures will hang at above normal levels today with highs in the 70’s and then Wednesday will be a transition day to much cooler conditions for the remainder of the week.

Discussion

Temperatures will stay on the cool side again today as a front gives us the chance for a shower or two this morning. High pressure will build back into the region later this week and this will help to bring about a noticeable warming trend that will last through the weekend.

11:45 AM | Cold weather and The World Series

Paul Dorian

Discussion

The date was October 27th and the situation was Game 5 of the 2008 World Series with the Phillies ahead of Tampa Bay 3 games to 1 and looking to wrap things up in their home stadium. Meanwhile, low pressure was intensifying along the Mid-Atlantic coast at the same time cold air was advancing towards the east coast from central Canada. A chilly rain actually began by the start of the game and it became so heavy by the bottom of the 6th inning that the game was suspended until weather conditions permitted. No way could the game be played on the next day as the cold rain continued and, in fact, enough cold air moved in to cause a changeover to snow in Bucks County where a few inches accumulated. By the next day, October 29th, the weather dried out enough for a resumption of action, but cold air was now firmly entrenched in the region and temperatures were in the 40’s with a strong northwest wind blowing for the remaining few innings of Game 5 when the Phillies wrapped up the championship.

While Game 5 of the 2008 World Series was indeed cold, the distinction for the official coldest World Series game (at least in recent history) goes to Game 4 of the 1997 Series between Cleveland and Florida. [MLB did not actually track weather records for the World Series until the 1970’s so it is certainly possible that there were colder games prior to this decade]. In Game 4 of the 1997 World Series there was a winter-chill with temperatures in the 30’s throughout the game, wind chills in the teens, and snow flurries that actually helped to cause some ice patches on the infield. Interestingly, the first two games of the 1997 World Series were played in Miami where temperatures were close to 90 degrees.

The weather has indeed played an important role in many World Series games; especially, in the last 40 years or so since the season has been extended to the end of October by additional playoff games. Back in the days when Bill Mazeroski hit a game winning home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, the Fall Classic was played in early-to-mid October. Now these games easily extend to the end of October and, in some cases, to early November. As a result, cold weather can certainly come into play more often than in years past; especially, in the northern cities.

This year’s World Series begins on Wednesday night in St. Louis or San Francisco (depending on the winner of tonight’s Game 7). It is certain that Games 3, 4 and 5 will be played in a northern city, Detroit, Michigan, and cold weather could very well play a role. If the World Series does go the full 7 games, it would end on Thursday, November 1st (weather permitting of course).

7:00 AM | Still somewhat cool to start the week, but a late week warming trend is likely

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Early morning low clouds then becoming partly sunny, breezy, cool, highs near 70 degrees

Tonight

Mostly cloudy, breezy, maybe a couple of showers, lows in the upper 50’s

Tuesday

Early morning clouds and a possible shower then becoming partly sunny, cool, upper 60’s

Tuesday Night

Becoming mostly cloudy, mild, near 60

Wednesday

Becoming mostly sunny, windy, pleasant, low 70's

Thursday

Mostly sunny, warmer, low-to-mid 70’s

Friday

Partly sunny, warm, mid-to-upper 70’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, very warm, near 80

Discussion

Onshore flow of air will continue today bringing some early morning low clouds especially to coastal sections. A cool front will approach the region tonight and it could throw a couple of showers our way in the overnight hours and early Tuesday. Cool temperatures will persist behind the front during the mid-week, but then a warming trend will take place late this week and continue this upcoming weekend.

Tonight

Mostly clear, cool, lows by morning in the upper 40’s

Tuesday

Mostly sunny, warm, mid 70’s

Tuesday Night

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, much colder, maybe a few snow showers, mid 40’s

Friday

Mostly cloudy, cold, chance for some snow, upper 30's

Discussion

It’ll stay rather warm through tomorrow, but big changes in temperatures are coming for the second half of the week. An upper level trough of low pressure will bring about a dramatic cool down for the second half of the week as it moves into the region later this week. Temperatures will hang at above normal levels today and tomorrow with highs in the 70’s and then Wednesday will be a transition day to much colder conditions for the remainder of the week and this change will bring us the chance for late week snow.

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Early morning fog possible then remaining mostly cloudy, cool, highs near 70 degrees

Tonight

Mostly clear early, clouds late, breezy, some patchy fog towards morning, lows in the lower 60’s

Saturday

Early morning fog and drizzle possible then remaining mostly cloudy, cool, upper 60’s

Saturday Night

Becoming mostly cloudy, some fog and drizzle possible late, low 60’s

Sunday

Early morning fog and drizzle possible then remaining mostly cloudy, cool, mid-to-upper 60’s

Monday

Early morning fog and drizzle possible then remaining mostly cloudy, cool, mid-to-upper 60’s

Tuesday

Partly sunny, cool, mid-to-upper 60’s

Wednesday

Partly sunny, cool, mid-to-upper 60’s

Discussion

Onshore flow of air will resume today and that will continue a cooling trend that began on Thursday. It’ll likely turn even cooler late this weekend and early next week as upper level low drops towards us from the Gulf of Alaska region. Late night and early morning low clouds, fog and drizzle are likely for the next few days and afternoon clearing will be hard to come by with the persistent onshore flow.

7:00 AM | Much more pleasant weather for the next few days

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, pleasant, low-to-mid 70’s

Tonight

Mostly clear, chilly, lows by morning in the low 40’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, warm, upper 70’s

Sunday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, near 70

Monday

Mostly sunny, pleasant, near 70

Tuesday

Mainly sunny, pleasant, near 70

Wednesday

Mainly sunny, cooler, mid 60’s

Discussion

Upper level high pressure ridging will cross over the state today into Saturday and this will produce a much weaker flow of air out of the northwest resulting in much weaker surface winds. Temperatures will be rather pleasant for the next few days and dry conditions should prevail.

7:00 AM | A cold start to the day and winds will still be quite strong this afternoon; weekend looks decent and the Orionid meteor shower reaches a peak early Sunday morning

Paul Dorian

6-Day Forecast

Today

Mostly sunny, still windy, cool, low-to-mid 60’s

Tonight

Mostly clear, cold, lows by morning in the low 30’s

Friday

Mostly sunny, not as cool nor as windy, low-to-mid 70’s

Friday Night

Partly cloudy, cool, mid 40’s

Saturday

Mostly sunny, warm, mid-to-upper 70’s

Sunday

**Meteor shower peaks in the pre-dawn hours** Mostly sunny, pleasant, near 70

Monday

Mainly sunny, cool, mid 60’s

Tuesday

Mainly sunny, cooler, mid 60’s

Discussion

The flow in the upper atmosphere is still quite strong, but has relaxed some since yesterday at which time some powerful wind gusts took place throughout the Rocky Mountain region. A strong upper level low will spin around near the Great Lakes region today and this will leave us in a dry, northwesterly flow of air. A warming trend will begin on Friday with highs back in the 70’s and the warmer weather will continue into the weekend. Viewing conditions look quite favorable this weekend for the Orionid meteor shower which peaks in the pre-dawn hours early Sunday morning.

11:50 AM | Should be a good meteor shower early Sunday morning

Paul Dorian

Discussion

The Orionid meteor shower takes place every year at this time as the Earth passes through a stream of dusty debris from Halley’s Comet and it should reach a peak this Sunday morning, October 21st, in the pre-dawn hours. This year might be especially good with no moon to spoil the show and at least 25 meteors per hour can be expected when the meteor shower hits its peak. Of course, this is all predicated on the idea that skies will be mostly clear and there is some hope for good viewing conditions in the Mid-Atlantic region as the weekend weather looks pretty decent from this vantage point.

The meteors for this event will streak out of the constellation Orion and the overall shower setting is framed by constellations Taurus and Gemini and, in this particular year, Venus and Jupiter will form a bright triangle with the bright star called Sirius (the Dog Star) in the pre-dawn eastern sky.

One of the characteristics of this particular annual meteor shower is that the meteoroids from Halley’s Comet travel at very highs speeds (148,000 mph) with only the November Leonids being faster. Speed is important because fast meteors have a tendency to explode and these “fireballs” can occasionally leave incandescent streams of debris in their wake that linger for minutes. In fact, the “meteor smoke” can be twisted by upper air winds into intricate shapes that may be quite interesting.
