Philadelphia is now just short of its wettest month ever with 13.00 inches of rain officially recorded at the International Airport for the month of August and this is shy by just 0.05 inches of the September 1999 record which was heavily influenced by the remains of Hurricane Floyd. Amazingly, we have reached 13.00 inches of rainfall this month with no contribution at all from the remains of any tropical system – and all of that could change dramatically later this weekend. Last week we discussed the potential threat for a tropical system to affect the southeast US late this week for the first time this hurricane season and now all eyes are on Hurricane Irene which will head to near the east coast of Florida by around Friday and then it could very well ride up the east coast. If this coastal track does occur, then heavy rain will be possible here late Saturday or Sunday - adding to our already excessive monthly rainfall totals.
