1:00 PM | Saturday coastal storm looks major with a cold rain and then accumulating snows likely

The very latest computer guidance continues to converge on a solution that could very well bring accumulating snow to much of the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday including in and around the big city regions along I-95. Earlier this week the GFS computer forecast model had forecasted this potential weekend storm to be well off the east coast, but it has now overcome its tendency to have a “southeast” bias for coastal storm locations several days away from the event and it now tends to agree with some of the other models in its storm location that is considerably closer to the coast. Precipitation could begin here late Friday night as a cold rain and then will likely mix with and then change to wet snow on Saturday with accumulations possible; especially, to the north and west of the big cities in the Mid-Atlantic and in higher elevation locations where several inches can pile up. Heavy, wet snow would obviously not be good news this time of year as most leaves still remain on the trees and this could lead to power outages from downed limbs and branches. Winds will also be quite strong on Saturday from the coastal storm that should pull out of here Saturday night and that clearing could lead to our first hard freeze of the season. Stay tuned.
