This historic October storm is currently intensifying rapidly off the SE Virginia coast where there are very impressive surface pressure falls and it will continue to spread destructive heavy, wet snow throughout much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast with numerous downed tree limbs and power outages. In fact, there are already thousands without power in western PA, western Maryland and West Virginia where it started snowing earlier in the day and, unfortunately, that pattern will likely spread north and east with the storm. The changeover from rain to snow has already occurred throughout much of the DC and Philly metro regions and will occur later this afternoon in the New York City metro area. Heavy, wet snow will continue for much of the afternoon where it is currently snowing with possible near whiteout conditions and thunder and lightning could even mix in. The storm winds down late this afternoon near DC, later this evening near Philly, and late tonight near NYC. Accumulations of 1-3 inches expected in the big cities with 3-6 inches in the nearby northern and western suburbs and there can even be isolated higher amounts; especially, in the highest elevation locations. There has already been over 7 inches of snow reported in portions of West Virginia and it might actually be a true “whiteout” later today at the Penn State football game where it is snowing heavily.
