7:00 AM | Much cooler today with more showers...Irma grinds toward Florida Straits

Paul Dorian

A strong cold front passed through the region last night and it’ll be noticeably cooler today while low pressure rides along the stalled out frontal boundary zone.  As a result, the threat for rain will continue through the day and into early tonight and there may be a thunderstorm or two mixed in.  Meanwhile, major Hurricane Irma continues to grind westward over the Atlantic and is on a track that will bring a significant impact to southern Florida later in the weekend.

7:00 AM | Soaking rain from later today into tomorrow night...Irma churns westward over the Atlantic as a major (cat 5) hurricane likely towards southern Florida

Paul Dorian

A strong cold front will head towards the east coast later today and bring some shower and thunderstorm activity to the region.  This front will then stall along the coastline later tonight and low pressure will ride up along the frontal boundary zone on Wednesday.  As a result, the threat for rain and possible thunderstorms will continue tomorrow and some of the rain can be heavy at times between late this afternoon and tomorrow night.  Ahead of the front, temperatures will climb into the 80’s today, but will be generally confined to the 60’s on Wednesday with the clouds and rain.  Meanwhile, Irma continues to churn over the Atlantic now as a category 5 “major” hurricane and is currently on a westerly track.  It is looking increasingly likely that Hurricane Irma could have a significant impact on southern Florida by late in the upcoming weekend.

7:00 AM | Unseasonably cool today and Saturday as moisture arrives from Harvey's remnants

Paul Dorian

A cold front passed the region last night and has ushered in an unseasonably cool air mass for the beginning of September.  High temperatures today and Saturday will be confined to the 60’s in most areas – well-below normal for this time of year.  In addition to the chill, moisture from the remnants of Harvey will push to the northeast and interact with an upper-level trough of low pressure.  The result will be some rainfall for the Mid-Atlantic region on Saturday and perhaps into early Sunday.  Overall weather conditions should improve noticeably by the early part of next week. Elsewhere, the tropics remain quite active and Hurricane Irma will track in a general westward motion in coming days.  Irma may very well become a concern for somewhere in the US in about ten days or so - stay tuned.

7:00 AM | Big time cool shot for Friday and Saturday

Paul Dorian

A cold front will approach the region late today and bring us the chance for some scattered showers and thunderstorms.  Following the frontal passage, an unseasonably cool air mass for late August will envelope the Mid-Atlantic region and temperatures will be well-below normal as we end the work week and begin the weekend.  At the same time, moisture from the remnants of Harvey will push to the northeast and the result is likely to be some rainfall here on Friday night and Saturday.  Overall weather conditions should improve early next week.

7:00 AM | Much improvement today as coastal storm pulls away...remains of Harvey here on Saturday

Paul Dorian

Coastal low pressure will pull away from the Mid-Atlantic coastline today and our weather will improve quite noticeably compared to the cool, wet day on Tuesday. It’ll become warmer on Thursday ahead of an approaching frontal system and there can be late day or nighttime showers and thunderstorms. The weekend may feature a wet spell courtesy of the remains of Hurricane Harvey as it pushes to the northeast after spending many days in the Deep South.

7:00 AM | *Coastal tropical system to impact the Mid-Atlantic region today*

Paul Dorian

The remains of Hurricane Harvey continue to spread rain in the Deep South and a second tropical system is riding up along the east coast. This second tropical system has spread clouds our way and we'll experience occasional rainfall as well with very cool conditions for this time of year. The most significant rainfall from today's coastal system is likely to take place across eastern Virginia, southern New Jersey, and much of the Delmarva Peninsula before the system pushes out to sea, but all areas in the I-95 corridor between DC and NYC will receive some rainfall.  Looking ahead, there is still no excessive heat in sight for the Mid-Atlantic region as the month of August winds down.

7:00 AM | Remains of Harvey continue to pound Texas, Louisiana with additional torrential rainfall

Paul Dorian

The remains of Hurricane Harvey will continue to result in torrential rainfall for parts of Texas and Louisiana with as much as 20 additional inches of rain possible in some sections over the next few days.  Last week’s greatest fears of upwards of 3 or 4 feet of rain is coming to fruition in some parts of the Texas and massive flooding has been the result.  Another tropical system is riding up along the Southeast US coastline today and it’ll actually head to the Outer Banks of North Carolina before turning away from the coast and out to sea. Clouds and possible rain should arrive from Tuesday into Wednesday in parts of the I-95 corridor and pretty significant rain will take place in southeastern Virginia, southern New Jersey, and parts of the Delmarva Peninsula.  There is still no excessive heat in sight for the Mid-Atlantic region as the month of August winds down.

7:00 AM | *Hurricane Harvey to pound Texas for several days...weather here stays very comfortable this weekend, but second tropical system could bring us some rain early next week*

Paul Dorian

Strong high pressure has expanded into the Northeast US and it will control our weather right through the weekend.  Temperatures and humidity levels will remain quite comfortable around here this weekend for the latter part of August. Elsewhere, the tropics are very active with Hurricane Harvey - now a category 2 storm - about to slam Texas with tremendous amounts of rainfall over the next several days.  A second tropical system near Florida is likely to slowly intensify as it churns northeastward along the Southeast US coastline in coming days and it could very well bring some rain here by later Monday and Tuesday.

7:00 AM | Long stretch of nice weather...tremendous rainfall coming to Texas from Tropical Storm Harvey

Paul Dorian

Strong high pressure is building into the Northeast US and it will control our weather right through the weekend and the early part of next week. Temperatures and humidity levels will be quite comfortable around here for late August over the next several days.  Elsewhere, the tropics are quite active and intensifying Tropical Storm Harvey is likely to have a major impact on southeastern Texas in coming days with prospects for tremendous rainfall amounts of up to a couple of feet possible. Harvey could very well be the first hurricane strike in Texas since 2008.  Another tropical system will slowly push northeastward along the Southeast US coastline and it could intensify enough to become named "Irma" as it spreads heavy rain from Florida to coastal North Carolina.

7:00 AM | Long stretch of more comfortable weather begins later today...active tropics could result in tremendous rainfall for Texas/Louisiana

Paul Dorian

A cold front is pushing through the region at this time and its passage will usher in much more comfortable air for the rest of the week.  In fact, as strong Canadian high pressure expands eastward from the Great Lakes region into the Northeast US, we’ll experience nice weather right through the upcoming weekend and into the early part of next week.  Elsewhere, the tropics are quite active and one system could have a major impact on Texas and Louisiana over the next several days with tremendous flooding potential and another one is likely to produce heavy rainfall along the Southeast US coastline from Florida to North Carolina.
