After the coldest morning of the season on Wednesday, temperatures will begin an upward trend for the remainder of the week. Low pressure off the east coast of Florida will pull away from the US and head into the open Atlantic. As a result, the pressure gradient between this low and high pressure to the north will relax as will our winds. With a relaxation of the winds will come a subtle shift in direction as well and this will allow for a warming trend to ensue across Florida and by tomorrow afternoon we could be pushing the 75 degree mark for highs.

Arctic air has chilled much of the eastern US over the past couple of days and this morning saw temperatures drop into the 30’s as far south as southern Florida. In fact, it was so cold across Florida this morning that cold-shocked iguanas were actually falling out of trees. These cold-blooded lizards usually survive a “cold-shock” like this when temperatures fall into the 30’s or 40’s and “wake up” as temperatures rise. The Arctic air that plunged into southern Florida took a north-to-south path over the Florida Peninsula from the northern US preventing any potential modification from the nearby relatively warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico.

A chilly air mass on the front side of strong high pressure will continue to result in colder-than-normal weather conditions for central Florida and showers cannot be ruled out and there is a chance for scattered showers. High pressure over the Ohio Valley will slowly shift to the eastern seaboard over the next couple of days and it will continue to dominate the weather scene in much of the eastern US. The combination of the high and low pressure over the Bahamas will generate a rather tight pressure gradient across Florida and a continuation of persistent winds for a couple more days.

It’ll turn somewhat cooler by the beginning of next week and there are signs for a much colder air mass to reach Florida later next week.
